Overview
MOVIT Institute for Development of Youth Mobility (Slovene: MOVIT Zavod za razvoj mobilnosti mladih, commonly shortened to Movit) is a private, non-governmental institute based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, founded in 1997. It works in the youth sector, acting as a national agency and support structure for European Union programmes that fund learning mobility, volunteering and youth work. Its core activity is the implementation of Erasmus+: Youth and the European Solidarity Corps for the EU programming period 2021–2027, following earlier generations of EU youth programmes in which it was involved from 1999 onward. Beyond programme administration, MOVIT operates several European information and support services. It carries out the tasks of Eurodesk, the European Commission's free youth information service, and hosts a SALTO (Support, Advanced Learning and Training Opportunities) resource centre for Southeast Europe. It also publishes the magazine Mladje and has supported documentary film projects by Luksuz produkcija, including Zadnji pionirji (2013) and Sosedje platna (2014). MOVIT's role is largely infrastructural: it distributes information, runs training and networking events, advises applicant organisations, and manages grant application rounds for youth exchanges, training courses, volunteering placements and solidarity projects. Its website functions as a portal for Slovenian youth organisations, announcing application deadlines, workshops and training such as the Učinek+ online training, the DiscoverEU travel-pass rounds, and safeguarding training for European Solidarity Corps organisations. As a private institute rather than a commercial company, MOVIT does not sell products in the conventional sense; its "offerings" are programmes, information services, publications and training. It is a well-known institutional brand within Slovenia's youth sector and within the European network of national agencies and SALTO centres.
History
MOVIT Zavod za razvoj mobilnosti mladih was established in 1997 as a private institute (zavod) headquartered in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to work in the youth sector as a non-governmental organisation. Its founding coincided with Slovenia's preparations for closer integration with European youth programmes, and it began implementing EU programmes in May 1999, when Slovenia joined the Youth for Europe III programme. From that starting point MOVIT carried forward successive generations of EU youth programmes: Youth (2000–2006), Youth in Action (2007–2013), and Erasmus+: Youth in Action (2014–2020). In the current EU programming period, 2021–2027, it implements Erasmus+: Youth and the European Solidarity Corps. Between 2009 and 2013 it also carried out the tasks of the information office of the Europe for Citizens programme. MOVIT's involvement with the SALTO network dates to 2002, when it began operating a SALTO resource centre; it has served as the SALTO centre for Southeast Europe. It has run the European Solidarity Corps programme since 2018. In addition, it performs the tasks of Eurodesk, the European Commission's free youth information service. Over time some of MOVIT's activities were taken over by other bodies. The European youth card EURO<26 and related activities were assumed by Avantis, an institute for international activities and cooperation, from 2004 (Avantis was abolished in 2018), and by Mobin, an institute for youth mobility and information, from 2010 (renamed SLOAM, Agency for Youth, in 2020). MOVIT also has a publishing and cultural dimension: it issues the magazine Mladje and supported short documentary films by Luksuz produkcija, Zadnji pionirji (2013) and Sosedje platna (2014). Its governing documents include the Act on the Establishment of the MOVIT Institute (1 July 2010) and the Statute of the MOVIT Institute (29 September 2021).
