Overview

Movimento Identità Trans (MIT) is an Italian social-purpose association that defends and supports the rights of transgender and travesti people. Founded in 1979, it is the first and oldest trans people's organisation in Italy. Its official founding dates to the summer of 1979, when protests by trans people became visible and, after a few years, led to the approval of Law 164 on 14 April 1982. At that time MIT fought not only for the recognition of trans identity but above all for respect for the rights and dignity of trans people: the right to a safe and guaranteed transition, the possibility of self-determination and of planning one's own life. In its initial phase, from its birth to the approval of Law 164, MIT—then called Movimento Italiano Transessuali—had offices in Turin, Milan, Florence and Rome; later Bologna and Treviso were added. It organised its own national congresses in 1987 in Milan, 1988 in Treviso and 1989 in Rome, where future trends and projects were outlined. In 1988 MIT Emilia Romagna was created, which over time became MIT Bologna and later the only MIT still active nationally. In 2006 the organisation officially became "Movimento Identità Transessuale". In 1990 Marcella Di Folco, leader and president of the association, was elected first district councillor and later, in 1995, city councillor. Today MIT runs a Consultorio (counselling centre) offering psychological support to individuals, couples and families; Via Luna, a harm-reduction project for sex workers staffed by cultural mediators, peer educators, social workers and lawyers; a Sportello Migranti LGBT+ (LGBT+ migrants desk) promoting and defending the rights of LGBTI migrants; and the STAR Anti-Discrimination/Anti-Violence Centre. Its projects include Empowerment, Sportello Casa e Lavoro, Common Ground (interregional actions against labour exploitation and support for victims), La Misura Della Tranquillità and PrEP. The association publishes its budget, membership campaign and public-funding reports, and in recent years helped launch the National Network of LGBTQIA+ Anti-Discrimination Centres.
