Overview

Movimento de Justiça e Direitos Humanos (MJDH) is a Brazilian non-governmental organization founded on 25 March 1979 and headquartered in Porto Alegre. It is dedicated to the defense of human rights, justice, and democratic freedoms. Even before its formal registration, the movement had been active since the 1970s, providing assistance to militants fleeing Latin American military dictatorships. It also helped rescue the wife of Argentine Montonero leader Mario Firmenich, reuniting the couple in Mexico City. Its work during the Brazilian military regime was recognized in a 2013 exhibition. In 2011, Jair Krischke, its main leader, received the Dom Hélder Câmara Human Rights Commendation from the Brazilian Federal Senate. Since 1984, the organization has promoted, together with the Brazilian Bar Association (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil), the Human Rights Journalism Award, given to the most relevant journalistic pieces on the defense of human dignity. The award ceremony takes place on 10 December, the date of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
