Overview
Moventia is a family-owned multinational company specialised in the mobility sector, founded in Sabadell in 1923 by Miquel Martí Adell. It began with a single urban bus in Sabadell and a small vehicle repair workshop, and over a century has grown into a group with operations on three continents: Europe, Asia and South America, with a particular focus on France and Saudi Arabia. In Spain it started in Catalonia and is now also present in Madrid, the Balearic Islands, Navarre and Andalusia. The group is organised around two main business divisions: Moventis, dedicated to collective mobility, and Movento, dedicated to private mobility. Moventis provides urban, interurban and long-distance public transport by bus, tram and tourist train, as well as on-demand transport, adapted transport for people with reduced mobility, and shuttle services. It operates more than fifteen urban transport contracts in Spain, France, Saudi Arabia and Portugal, carrying over 50 million passengers a year, and manages the interurban bus network in Saudi Arabia, which transports more than 18 million people annually. Moventis also runs tourist buses such as Barcelona City Tour and Catalunya Bus Turístic, and participates in the Barcelona tram network through Trambaix UTE and Trambesòs UTE with a 34% stake alongside Transdev (66%). Movento, the private mobility division, sells and distributes 19 vehicle and motorcycle brands and offers official after-sales service for Mercedes-Benz Cars, Vans and Trucks (Movento Stern), Renault and others. The group has more than 1,850 buses and coaches, 41 trams and 13 tourist trains, with a total transport capacity of over 150 million passengers a year and more than 110 million kilometres travelled annually. It employs over 6,300 people across more than 50 work centres. Moventia describes itself as a family business, multinational and expert in improving society's connections through mobility since 1923. Its purpose is to promote the development and connection of people through sustainable mobility, guided by values of sustainability, honesty, innovation and commitment. The company is privately held and remains controlled by the Martí family, now in its fourth generation.
History
Moventia was founded in 1923 in Sabadell by Miquel Martí Adell, starting with a single urban bus and a small vehicle repair workshop in the same city. In 1933 the Martí family acquired the Barcelona bus line known as La Catalana. By 1936, when the Spanish Civil War broke out, the company had 50 employees and 15 buses; Miquel Martí Adell was only able to keep the workshop. After the war, Miquel Martí Adell recovered ownership of the transport company and part of the confiscated vehicles, which despite their poor condition he was able to repair and put back into service. The company restored service within a few months but had to face fuel shortages and a lack of essential materials for transport resulting from restrictions and Spain's international isolation. From 1951 to 1979, the Martí family group began a period of expansion under the second generation: Heribert and Miquel Martí Carceller. The group grew beyond Catalonia and took over urban services in Córdoba and Zaragoza. The automotive branch went from being an official Renault agency in Sabadell to a dealership. In the 1980s, the family lost the urban transport concession in Sabadell. The solution to remain in the sector was a merger with Renom Bus, creating Grup Sarbus, a transport operator in Catalonia. In automotive, it obtained the official Renault Vehículos Industriales concession in Sabadell and Terrassa. From 1991 to 2014, the third generation of the Martí family, led by Miquel, Josep Maria and Sílvia Martí Escursell, took direction. Following a change in the shareholding of Sarbus and Transports Ciutat Comtal, the group went from shared management with other partners to being the sole private shareholder. Moventia was created with a new corporate organisation and two business divisions: Moventis for collective mobility services and Movento for private mobility. The fourth family generation also joined the group, led by Miquel Martí Pierre and Santi Colomer Martí. From 2015 to the present, Moventia has maintained its two divisions. In these years it has also incorporated bike rental service contracts in various European countries, as well as tourist train and bus services in different cities of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. Since 2024, it has participated in the extension of the Trambesòs network along Avinguda Diagonal and in the public-private collaboration management model through TRAM Operadora, via the companies Trambaix UTE and Trambesòs UTE, where Moventia actively participates with 34%, alongside Transdev (66%). Moventia is also part of the concessionary companies Tramvia Metropolità SA (20%) and Tramvia Metropolità del Besòs SA (22.56%).
