Overview

Movemi AG (stylised as movemi) is a Swiss fitness company belonging to the Migros group. It operates fitness studios and fitness parks in Switzerland under two principal brands, Fitnesspark and ACTIV FITNESS. The company traces its corporate lineage to Activ Fitness AG, which was renamed Movemi AG in connection with the consolidation of the Migros cooperatives' fitness formats. Its name is a word creation combining the English word "move" with the syllable "mi". The business grew out of two separate traditions. The Fitnesspark line began in 1974 as M-Fit, a course offering of the Klubschule Migros, and developed into facilities that could be used outside organised courses, including the Fitnesspark Tribschen opened in Lucerne in 1977. The Activ Fitness line began with the first studio under that name, opened in Erlenbach in 1984 by Armin Fach, and was incorporated through a series of regional companies from 1988 onward. The whole Activ Fitness undertaking was taken over by the Genossenschaft Migros Zürich (GMZ) in April 2007, after which it expanded nationwide through new openings and acquisitions. Under GMZ ownership the chain absorbed several competitors and regional operators, including Club Pleine-Forme SA in Neuchâtel and form24 SA in Aigle in 2015, and Silhouette Wellness SA in 2017. The 15 MFIT fitness centres of the Genossenschaft Migros Ostschweiz were taken over with effect from 1 January 2020 and rebranded as Activ Fitness. On 1 January 2022 the fitness operations of the Migros Aare, Lucerne and Vaud cooperatives were transferred to the company, and the company adopted the name Movemi AG. The integration of the fitness facilities of the Migros Basel cooperative followed in January 2024. Today Movemi presents itself on the Swiss market with around 139 facilities across the two brands Fitnesspark and ACTIV FITNESS. Ownership is held by the Genossenschaft Migros Zürich with 77.94% and the Genossenschaft Migros Aare with 22.06%. The company is active in the operation of fitness facilities, including the premium ELEMENTS format, as well as in franchising and consulting for fitness studios.

History

The history of Movemi combines two fitness traditions that both ultimately came under the Migros group. The Fitnesspark line began in 1974 as M-Fit, a course offering of the Klubschule Migros. In 1977 the Fitnesspark Tribschen opened in Lucerne, the first facility with a bathing area that could be used outside organised courses; it was closed in 2012 and replaced by "Allmend". A facility opened in 1978 in the Regensdorf centre development followed the same pattern. Today there are 16 Fitnesspark facilities nationwide. The Activ Fitness line began when the first studio under the name Activ Fitness was opened in Erlenbach in 1984 by Armin Fach. In March 1988 the Activ-Fitness Meilen AG was founded as the operating company for the studio opened in Meilen in 1989, followed by sister companies. The Activ Fitness Rüti AG, founded in 1996, operated the business of the sole proprietorship Schneider Fitness in Rüti, which had been taken over the previous year. The Zug-based Number One Fitness AG moved its seat to Wädenswil in 1999 and was renamed Activ Fitness Wädenswil AG the following year. In 1998 the Activ Fitness Jona AG was merged retroactively from the beginning of the year into the Meilen main company, which from then on was called Activ Fitness AG. The remaining companies in Wädenswil (2005) and Rüti (2007) were also merged in. The entire undertaking was taken over by the Genossenschaft Migros Zürich (GMZ) at the beginning of April 2007. Under GMZ, expansion was intensified nationwide through new openings and acquisitions. The company moved from Meilen to Stäfa in 2012 and opened its first location in French-speaking Switzerland, in Fribourg, in the same year. For entry into the market area of the Genossenschaft Migros Tessin, the Activ Fitness Ticino SA was founded in 2014 at the seat of Migros Tessin in Sant'Antonino, and the first Ticino location opened in Losone the same year. The number of locations rose from 20 in 2013 to 30 in 2015 and 40 in 2016, coinciding with a new opening in Geneva. In 2015 the Club Pleine-Forme SA in Neuchâtel and the form24 SA in Aigle were absorbed by merger. With effect from 9 May 2017 the Silhouette Wellness SA, based in Meyrin with 22 locations in the Lake Geneva region and Zurich, was taken over; its temporarily continued market presences "Silhouette" and "Pure" were converted to "Activ Fitness" by mid-2018 and the company was absorbed. In the fourth quarter of 2018 the administration moved from Stäfa to Zurich, into the so-called Vertex development in the Seebach quarter. The 15 MFIT fitness centres of the Genossenschaft Migros Ostschweiz were taken over with effect from 1 January 2020 and now appear under the Activ Fitness brand. The Migros-Fitnesspark, Migros-Fitnessclub and Only Fitness of the Genossenschaft Migros Aare were transferred to Movemi AG with effect from 1 January 2022. At the same time the fitness centres of the Genossenschaft Migros Luzern (Fitnesspark, ONE Training Center, Only Fitness) and the fitness centre of the Genossenschaft Migros Vaud were taken over. With effect from 1 January 2024 the three fitness studios and the fitness park of the Genossenschaft Migros Basel were taken over. Through these mergers and new openings there are a total of 121 Activ Fitness studios in Switzerland. In the course of taking over the fitness formats, the company Activ Fitness AG received the new name Movemi AG; movemi is a word creation from the English "move" and the syllable "mi". Also retroactively to 1 January 2022, the Genossenschaft Migros Zürich separated from its subsidiary ACISO Fitness & Health GmbH, Munich. The company is active in the operation of premium fitness facilities ELEMENTS, franchising and consulting for fitness studios. Shareholders are the Genossenschaft Migros Zürich with 77.94% and the Genossenschaft Migros Aare with 22.06%.
