History
The Mountain Inn Faulhorn, known in German as Berghotel Faulhorn, is a privately operated alpine refuge and mountain hotel located a few metres below the summit of the Faulhorn (2,681 m) in the Bernese Prealps of Switzerland. Its history begins in 1823, when a restaurant was opened on the summit based on a tavern concession granted the previous year. At that time, it was the highest-altitude restaurant in the Alps. In 1830, the hotel building that still exists today was constructed. The inn has served as a mountain refuge and hostelry for hikers and climbers for nearly two centuries. It is listed in the building inventory of the canton of Bern as a historic structure. The establishment remains privately operated and continues to provide accommodation and refreshments to visitors of the Faulhorn. Access is exclusively on foot: the shortest ascent starts at the mountain station of the cable car from Grindelwald to First (2,167 m) and takes just under 2.5 hours; without mechanical assistance, the climb from Grindelwald takes about twice as long. From Bussalp (1,800 m), reachable by bus in summer, the Faulhorn can be reached in about 2.5 to 3 hours. From the mountain station of the Schynige Platte railway (1,987 m), the ascent takes 4 to 4.5 hours.
