Overview

Mount Saint Ursula Lodge (Slovene: Dom na Uršlji gori) is a mountain lodge situated just below the summit of Uršlja gora (also known as Plešivec, 1699 m) in the Pohorje range of northern Slovenia, next to the church of St. Ursula built in 1602. It is owned and maintained by the Prevalje Mountaineering Society (Planinsko društvo Prevalje, PD Prevalje), a voluntary association that celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2009 and has long supplied and cared for the lodge. The lodge operates as a seasonal hospitality and accommodation facility for hikers, typically open from the beginning of June to the end of September, including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The original lodge was built in 1912 by a German-Austrian mountaineering society. After the First World War it was taken over by the Mislinja branch of the Slovenian Mountaineering Society. It burned down during the Second World War on 29 August 1942. After liberation, the burned lodge was taken over by PD Prevalje, which renovated it and reopened it on 22 August 1948. Between 1980 and 1983 a large, modern annex was built and functionally connected to the thoroughly renovated old lodge; the enlarged and renovated complex was ceremonially opened on 17 June 1984 on the occasion of PD Prevalje's 65th anniversary. Mobile telephone coverage reached the area in early 1992. The guest area offers 100 seats and a bar counter; there are 120 seats at tables in front of the lodge; 11 rooms provide 60 beds, and two shared dormitories offer 22 more places. Facilities include toilets, a washroom with hot and cold water, and central heating in the new part; water, electricity and mobile signal are available. The lodge is a popular base for hiking and enjoying the extensive views from Uršlja gora, which on clear days extend to the Julian Alps with Triglav, the High Tauern and the Pannonian Plain. In the years 2005–2009, PD Prevalje members carried out voluntary work and used the society's own funds to renovate the toilets, replace windows, buy a dishwasher, and modernise the kitchen and pantry to ease the work of the caretakers and volunteer hostesses. In 2010 the society applied to a public tender by the Ministry of the Economy under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the renovation and modernisation of mountain huts, part of the Operational Programme for Strengthening Regional Development Potentials 2007–2013. The application succeeded, securing 56.3% of the total investment cost. With these non-repayable European funds, the bathroom was modernised, the bar counter, tables and chairs were replaced, a demit facade was installed, and the asbestos roofing was replaced with trapezoidal sheet metal. The lodge remains an active mountain hospitality brand under PD Prevalje, with the current lessee listed as Nejc Juvan.
