The Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company was a historic Tasmanian mining and transport enterprise based at Queenstown on the island state's rugged West Coast. Formed on 29 March 1893, it consolidated a number of mining leases and became the principal industrial force in the Mount Lyell field. Although copper was its central product, the company also recovered gold and silver, operated smelting and chemical-processing facilities, and ran a railway connecting Queenstown with the port and transshipment point at Regatta Point near Strahan. Mount Lyell grew in an environment of intense competition among small West Coast mining ventures. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, neighboring leases and companies were progressively absorbed, closed, or integrated into the Mount Lyell operating system. The takeover of the North Mount Lyell Copper Company in 1903 expanded the company's control, while the 1912 North Mount Lyell disaster, also known as the North Lyell fire, became the most serious catastrophe in its history. The company was economically dominant in and around Queenstown, Gormanston, and Strahan for much of the twentieth century. Its mine workings developed across multiple ore bodies and operating areas, including Iron Blow, North Lyell, Royal Tharsis, Lyell Comstock, Crown Lyell, West Lyell Open Cut, Cape Horn, and Prince Lyell. Mining methods changed over time as accessible ore bodies were exhausted and new underground and open-cut operations were developed. By the 1970s the workforce had been reduced substantially, and the decline of the company affected Queenstown's population, services, and regional influence. Mount Lyell's industrial activities extended beyond extraction. It produced sulphuric acid and superphosphate and held interests in fertilizer businesses in Victoria and Western Australia. In 1927 it joined Cuming, Smith & Co. and Westralian Farmers Superphosphates in forming Cuming Smith & Mount Lyell Farmers Fertilisers Ltd. Mount Lyell later sold its interest, and that business ultimately became associated with CSBP. Its Yarraville chemical works were separately combined with other producers in 1929 and later became part of Commonwealth Fertilisers and Chemicals, which was absorbed into ICI Australia and New Zealand. The company's railway was an important part of its integrated business model. From 1899 to 1963, Mount Lyell operated a 3 ft 6 in gauge railway between Queenstown and Regatta Point. The line used the Abt rack system on steep sections, allowing mineral traffic and supplies to move through difficult terrain. Most of the original railway was dismantled after operations ended, although the formation was later rebuilt for heritage tourism as the Abt Wilderness Railway, now known as the West Coast Wilderness Railway. Mining under the original company ended in 1994, by which time Mount Lyell was operating as the Copper Division of Renison Goldfields Consolidated. The lease was reopened in 1995 by Copper Mines of Tasmania, later acquired by Sterlite Industries and brought into the Vedanta group. Those later operations are distinct from the original Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, although they continued mining at the historic field. Production associated with the Mount Lyell field over its long operating history exceeded one million tonnes of copper, alongside substantial quantities of silver and gold. The company also left a major environmental legacy. Tailings, slag, acid drainage, and other mine wastes entered the Queen and King rivers and Macquarie Harbour. History
Mount Lyell emerged from the rapid development of Tasmania's West Coast mineral fields during the late nineteenth century. The company was formally established on 29 March 1893, when mining entrepreneurs sought to organize and consolidate interests around the Mount Lyell copper deposits. In its early years the enterprise competed with numerous smaller leaseholders and mining companies. Over time, these neighboring operations were absorbed, abandoned, or incorporated into the dominant Mount Lyell system. The acquisition of the North Mount Lyell Copper Company in 1903 was a significant consolidation step. The company subsequently controlled a broad group of leases and explored much of the West Coast Range, periodically revisiting older workings and maintaining exploration rights over areas considered geologically promising. Its operations expanded beyond mining into ore treatment, smelting, chemical production, and transport. The company established chemical works producing sulphuric acid and superphosphate, including works at Yarraville in Victoria and North Fremantle in Western Australia. The 1912 North Mount Lyell disaster, commonly called the North Lyell fire, was the most serious disaster in the company's history. Iron Blow operated from 1883 to 1929, North Lyell from 1896 to 1972, Royal Tharsis from 1902 to 1991, Lyell Comstock from 1913 to 1959, Crown Lyell from 1931 to 1985, West Lyell Open Cut from 1934 to 1978, Cape Horn from 1969 to 1987, and Prince Lyell from 1969 to 1995. These dates reflect changing ore bodies and operating areas rather than a single uninterrupted mine design. Mount Lyell also became involved in fertilizer production. In 1927 it joined Cuming, Smith & Co. and Westralian Farmers Superphosphates to establish Cuming Smith & Mount Lyell Farmers Fertilisers Ltd, with each participant holding an equal share. Mount Lyell sold its interest in 1963–64, after which the enterprise was renamed CSBP. In 1929, its Yarraville works were combined with those of Cuming, Smith & Co. and Wischer & Co. to form Commonwealth Fertilisers and Chemicals, later absorbed into ICI Australia and New Zealand. The environmental consequences of the long operating period became increasingly prominent after closure. Mine waste and effluent had entered the Queen and King rivers and Macquarie Harbour. Historical disposal included an estimated 100 million tonnes of tailings in the Queen River system. Pollution involved acid drainage, tailings, slag, and metals, while vegetation around Queenstown was affected by clearing, erosion, fire, and industrial emissions. A remediation and research program operated from 1994 to 1996. Later scientific work identified drainage from the mine lease, particularly water associated with the North Lyell Tunnel and other underground workings, as the dominant source of acid-related pollution. The historic lease reopened in 1995 under Copper Mines of Tasmania. That successor company was acquired by Sterlite Industries in 1999 and became part of the Vedanta group. Mining was later suspended following accidents in the 2010s, with the operation described as being in a mothballed condition in the late 2010s. The original company's records were deposited with Tasmanian archives, and its history was documented prominently in Geoffrey Blainey's The Peaks of Lyell.
