Overview

The Motion Picture Public Foundation of Hungary (Hungarian: Magyar Mozgókép Közalapítvány, MMKA) was a Hungarian public foundation (közalapítvány) that served as the country's principal vehicle for distributing state film-funding between 1998 and 2012. It was created in 1998 by the Hungarian government together with 26 film-industry organizations, succeeding the Magyar Mozgókép Alapítvány that had been established in 1992. Under the Hungarian film law, the MMKA distributed the sums earmarked in the state budget for supporting the film industry, as well as other revenues serving the same purpose. Its founding objectives were to support the production, distribution and preservation of Hungarian films in every genre, to assist the dissemination of Hungarian film art abroad and of universal film art within Hungary, and to represent the Hungarian film profession both domestically and internationally. It was also tasked with supporting and representing Hungarian film art beyond the borders. During its period of operation the MMKA developed the application principles and the application calendar for the allocation of funds. The foundation was headquartered at Városligeti fasor 38 in Budapest's District VI. Its administrative tasks were carried out by the Nemzeti Filmiroda (National Film Office), and the resources needed for the MMKA's operation appeared in that body's budget. Alongside the board of trustees (kuratórium), six specialist colleges operated: feature film, animation, documentary, film distribution, scientific-educational, and a Research, Training, Experimental Film, Book and Periodical Publishing College. The MMKA ceased to exist without a legal successor in 2012. From 2011 its tasks were taken over by the Magyar Nemzeti Filmalap (Hungarian National Film Fund) and the MTVA Mecenatúra Program; from 2019 all of its functions have been performed by the Filmalap, renamed the Nemzeti Filmintézet (National Film Institute). The foundation's leadership was appointed by the founders and confirmed by the minister of culture with the government's consent; Ferenc Grunwalsky chaired the board from 2006 to 2010 and Zoltán Kőrösi from 2010 to 2014.

History

The Motion Picture Public Foundation of Hungary (Magyar Mozgókép Közalapítvány, MMKA) was established in 1998 by the Hungarian government and 26 film-industry organizations, as the successor of the Magyar Mozgókép Alapítvány founded in 1992. It was set up as a public foundation (közalapítvány) charged, under the film law, with distributing the amounts earmarked in the state budget for supporting the film industry, together with other revenues serving the same purpose. Its founding objectives covered the production, distribution and preservation of Hungarian films in all genres; assistance to the dissemination of Hungarian film art abroad and of universal film art in Hungary; and representation of the Hungarian film profession at home and abroad. It was also responsible for supporting and representing Hungarian film art beyond the borders. During its operation the MMKA worked out the application principles and the application calendar for the allocation of funds. The foundation's seat was at Városligeti fasor 38 in Budapest's District VI. Its administrative tasks were performed by the Nemzeti Filmiroda (National Film Office), and the funds required for the MMKA's operation were included in that office's budget. Beside the board of trustees, six specialist colleges operated: feature film, animation, documentary, film distribution, scientific-educational, and the Research, Training, Experimental Film, Book and Periodical Publishing College.
