Overview
The Mother Child Education Foundation (Turkish: Anne Çocuk Eğitim Vakfı, commonly known as AÇEV) is a Turkish non-profit organisation founded in 1993 and headquartered in Istanbul. It works to strengthen early childhood development, support parents and caregivers, and expand access to quality education for disadvantaged children and families across Turkey. AÇEV is widely recognised for its evidence-based home visiting and centre-based programmes, including the Mother-Child Education Programme (MOCEP), which combines child stimulation with maternal support, and the Father Support Programme, which engages fathers in child development. The foundation also runs family literacy and women's empowerment courses, often in partnership with public agencies, municipalities, universities and international organisations. Its work is grounded in research and evaluation, and its curricula have been adapted in several other countries. As a civil society organisation rather than a commercial enterprise, AÇEV operates through grants, donations, public partnerships and project funding. It has become one of Turkey's best-known education-focused NGOs and a reference point for early childhood policy and practice in the region.
History
The Mother Child Education Foundation (Anne Çocuk Eğitim Vakfı, AÇEV) was established in 1993 in Istanbul, Turkey, as a non-profit foundation dedicated to early childhood education and family support. It grew out of the Mother-Child Education Programme (MOCEP), an initiative developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s to provide structured cognitive and social stimulation to preschool children from low-income families while training their mothers as primary educators. The programme was designed and evaluated with academic partners, and its positive results helped make the case for a permanent foundation. Over the following decades, AÇEV expanded its portfolio beyond MOCEP to include the Father Support Programme, family literacy courses, women's empowerment and vocational training, and early childhood education centres. It has worked extensively with Turkey's Ministry of National Education, municipalities, universities and international bodies, and its curricula have been adapted for use in other countries. The foundation has also been active in public advocacy, research and awareness campaigns on early childhood development, parenting and literacy. As of the 2020s, AÇEV remains an active Turkish civil society organisation, funded through donations, grants and partnerships, and continues to run programmes across Turkey.
