Overview
Mostecký Kahan minibrewery (Czech: Minipivovar Kahan, also known as Mostecký Kahan) is a Czech microbrewery and brewpub located in Most, in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. It was founded in 2009 in the premises of the former Kosmos cinema on a housing estate in Most, and it describes itself as the only brewery of its kind in the Most region. The brewery continues the brewing tradition of the town of Most, whose original municipal brewery was demolished in 1972, rebuilt in 1976, and finally closed in 1998 after bankruptcy proceedings. The brewery operates an on-site pivovarská restaurace (brewery restaurant) where guests can order food and beer, and it is unusual in that the brewhouse and even the fermentation cellar are visible directly from the restaurant, allowing visitors to watch the brewing process. Its beers are all unfiltered and unpasteurised, brewed with quality malt and hops together with water from the local Fláje sources, which is considered among the highest-quality water in the country and was also used by the old Most brewery. According to the brewery, it uses Žatec hops, Plzeň malt, Krušovice yeast and Fláje water. The core year-round range includes Mostecká 11° (a pale lager), Magistr Edward Kelley (a 12° pale lager) and Zdař Bůh (a 12° amber lager), all available on tap and in one-litre PET bottles. A dark 12° lager, Štajgr, is offered in PET bottles. These staples are supplemented by seasonal specials, which change throughout the year and can be poured into takeaway bottles at the restaurant. The brewery also offers beer in 15-litre, 30-litre and 50-litre kegs for private events. Over its relatively short history the owner has expanded the brewhouse from 200 to 500 litres and enlarged the brewery cellars. The brewery has won several awards, including second place for its dark 12° lager and its 15° Easter special at the Jarní cena českých sládků (Spring Prize of Czech Brewers) in 2013, third place for its smoked wheat 13° at the Ústecký pivní jarmark in 2013, second place for Magistr Edward Kelley 12° in the pale lager category at the same fair in 2014, and first place in the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages category of the Regionální potravina Ústeckého kraje (Regional Food of the Ústí Region) in 2014 for its 12° amber lager. The brewery is a private, independent business. It is not listed on any stock exchange and has no known parent company. Its beers are sold primarily through its own brewery restaurant and via direct orders for kegs and bottles, serving the local Most region and nearby areas.
History
Brewing in the town of Most has a long tradition dating back to 1273, when Most was granted municipal rights. The original town brewery was demolished in 1972 and rebuilt in 1976, but in 1998 bankruptcy proceedings were declared against it and production ceased. The Mostecký Kahan minibrewery was founded in 2009 in the premises of the former Kosmos cinema on a housing estate in Most, with a pub as part of the building. It thus continues the brewing tradition of the defunct Most brewery in the Sedlec district. The brewery produces unfiltered and unpasteurised beer. In addition to its permanent range, it offers a number of special beer types. The beer is brewed from Žatec hops, Plzeň malt, Krušovice yeast and water from local Fláje sources, which the old brewery also used. A rarity of the Kahan brewery is the possibility to watch beer production directly in the restaurant, as both the brewhouse and the fermentation cellar are located there. Over its relatively short history, the owner has expanded the brewhouse from 200 to 500 litres and enlarged the brewery cellars. The permanent range includes Mostecký Kahan 12° pale lager, dark beer and amber beer. Specials have included Pšeničná 12° (the brewery's first special), Perla Severu 17° (Easter 2011), Kouřící drak (a smoked special with chilli), Mnichovský speciál, flavoured beers such as Medová 16°, Borůvkový Porter and Višňový Porter 13°, Višňový speciál, Vanilkový speciál, Fíkový speciál, Horníkův cumel 12° (caramel), beers flavoured with cappuccino, mandarin, bitter orange, raspberry or lime, Mosteckej malvaz 18°, Nakouřený Kahan 13°, IPA 14° and IPA 15°, smoked wheat, Černí andělé 12° (a dark lager honouring the partnership with the handball club Černí Andělé DHK Baník Most), Pivní burčák 11° and Černá vdova 16°. The brewery has received several awards. At the Jarní cena českých sládků (Spring Prize of Czech Brewers) in 2013, Kahan dark lager 12° took second place in the dark lager category and Kahan Easter special 15° took second place in the pale special category. At the Ústecký pivní jarmark in 2013, Kahan smoked wheat 13° took third place in the special and flavoured beers category; in 2014, Magistr Edward Kelley 12° took second place in the pale lager category. In 2014, Kahan amber lager 12° won first place in the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages category of the Regionální potravina Ústeckého kraje (Regional Food of the Ústí Region).
