History
Morakniv is a family-owned company, founded in 1891 and today run by a board with an external CEO. A Morakniv is always made in Mora; in the company's factory in Östnor, 135 years of knife-making tradition are combined with modern production. The company's history begins in 1891 when Frost-Erik Erson returned home to the village of Östnor in Mora after four years in North America and opened his timber sled factory, where sleds, carts and knives were produced. Knife-making soon took off, and the knives became a sought-after trade item spread across Sweden by travelling peddlers. By the turn of the century, Morakniv was well-known among craftsmen and woodworkers, distributed in Sweden by Böhlmark & Co, and the knives were also exported to wholesalers, gunpowder merchants and ironmongers across Europe; with ten employees in 1904, Frosts produced 19,000 knives annually. In 1912, Krång-Johan "KJ" Eriksson left Frosts after a dispute with management and, together with Lok-Anders Mattsson, established Eriksson & Mattssons Knife Factory in Östnor – a business that much later became part of Morakniv; in 1918, Lok-Anders left and KJ continued under the name KJ Erikssons Knivfabrik. Morakniv holds a Royal Warrant of Appointment to H.M. the King of Sweden, a distinction shared by around 130 Swedish companies and awarded when products are recognized for their high quality.
