Montessori Academy was founded in 2000 by husband and wife Charles and Colette Assaf. According to the company's own account, the couple, as parents of five young children, were searching for more than traditional childcare and were inspired after visiting a small Montessori kindergarten in Croydon, where they observed children independently choosing activities and concentrating deeply. Not long after, the kindergarten was placed up for sale. The company states it has since grown to over 70 childcare and long day care centres nationwide, with a presence in Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra, and describes itself as having 25+ years of excellence in Montessori education.
