History
Montauk Manor was conceived in the summer of 1925 by multi-millionaire industrialist Carl Fisher, who was responsible for the development of Miami Beach, Florida. His vision was to create the "most fabulous summer resort ever imagined in the western world" in Montauk, New York, including a beach club, yacht club, polo fields, golf course, glass-enclosed tennis courts, a boardwalk over half a mile long, a ranch, and a health spa. The centerpiece was to be a 200-room English Tudor hotel built high atop Signal Hill: the Montauk Manor. In the spring of 1927, part of Fisher's vision became reality with the opening of The Manor as the grand centerpiece. Its ballrooms were filled with the rich and famous of the day, restaurants served internationally acclaimed cuisine, croquet was played on the front lawn, and tea was served on the veranda overlooking the 10,000-acre dream resort. Economic change and time destroyed Fisher's dream until virtually nothing remained except the Manor, which stands as a testimonial to the grandeur of days gone by. The national landmark has since been restored to its original splendor and beauty, allowing a limited number of people to live in Fisher's "Castle on the Hill." The Manor now contains 140 condominium apartments, a magnificent outdoor heated swimming pool, a private health club, and three tennis courts, with complete hotel services available.
