Overview
Monstro Discos is an independent Brazilian record label founded in 1998 by Leonardo Ribeiro, with its first release being the CD 'Sex, Rockets and Filth Songs' by the band Mechanics. Based in Goiânia, Goiás, the label has since issued roughly 180 titles across formats including CDs, vinyl records, cassettes, VHS tapes, DVDs, as well as books, comics and sticker albums. It is known for championing Brazilian rock and alternative music, with a catalogue featuring artists such as Autoramas, Júpiter Maçã, Mundo Livre S/A, Ratos de Porão, Cascadura, Macaco Bong and many others. Beyond releasing records, Monstro Discos established itself as an important concert and event producer through the creation of the Goiânia Noise Festival, one of the largest and most important festivals in Brazil. The festival has hosted numerous new and established acts, including Sepultura, Los Hermanos, Pato Fu, Guitar Wolf, Nação Zumbi, Nebula, Black Mountain, Matanza, Dirty Projectors, BNegão, The Exploited, Bellrays, Biohazard, Delinquent Habits, Helmet, Violeta de Outono, Raimundos, Gerson King Combo, Garotos Podres, Sérgio Dias and Watts. The label has received the largest number of nominations at the Dynamite Independent Music Awards and was described in 2021 by the newspaper Estado de Minas as one of the most segmented labels in Brazil. In 2009, Monstro Discos director Fabrício Nobre won a British Council award. In 2018 the label invested heavily in vinyl again, releasing 28 titles. In 2021, due to the impossibility of holding its main festival during the Covid-19 pandemic, Monstro Discos turned to crowdfunding to organise an online festival called Goiânia Rock City 2021, held between 16 and 18 July, bringing together around 12 bands in live-streamed performances. The label also operates an online store, Lojamonstro, selling new and used vinyl, CDs, DVDs, cassettes, merchandise and more, with a catalogue spanning classic rock, Brazilian music (MPB), metal, punk, indie and other genres.
