Overview

Mondigromax, cultivos de cultura (also styled Mondigromax, cultius de cultura) is a Barcelona-based performing arts production and touring company founded in 2001 by Dietrich Grosse, a German dancer, cultural manager and executive producer who has lived in Barcelona since 1979. The company was created to bring together Grosse's various professional interests and passions, with the vital complicity and emotional support of Montse Majench. Its stated mission is to promote new opera and dance creations on stage while simultaneously accompanying dance and ballet companies from around the world in their search for new theatres and festivals where they can reach new audiences. The company describes its work as researching the creative fabric, detecting special creative seeds, and stimulating the production of innovative, quality projects. It is involved in the gearing of creation, its exhibition, and the distribution of works, channelling the affinities of the cast involved in the performing arts: artists, programmers, communicators, administrators and spectators. Body and dance were at the origin of the project, from dancer to manager and on to executive producer. Mondigromax operates primarily as a touring and production partner for contemporary dance and ballet companies. Its roster of past and present touring productions includes Gauthier Dance Company – Theaterhaus Stuttgart (Germany), Israel Galván (Spain), Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company (Germany), Meg Stuart – Damaged Goods (Belgium), Sasha Waltz & Guests (Germany), Ballett der Semperoper Dresden (Germany), Iceland Dance Company (Iceland), Quasar Cia. de Dança (Brazil), Sebastian Weber Dance Company (Germany), NND:Galili Dance (Netherlands), Aterballetto (Italy), Balé da Cidade de São Paulo (Brazil), Sydney Dance Company (Australia), Ballet Gulbenkian (Portugal), Ballet BC (Canada), Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg (Germany) and Wiener Staatsballett (Austria). It has also been involved in opera productions at houses such as Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Polish National Opera, Opernhaus Halle, Nationaltheater Mannheim and Neuköllner Oper Berlin. In addition to touring, Mondigromax has been associated with creations such as the Gala Europa 2019 in Madrid and productions linked to artists including Marcel·lí Antúnez and Tórtola Valencia. The company maintains an active news section announcing upcoming tours, including Ballet BC's debut in Winterthur, Switzerland in September 2026 and its Austrian performances of works by Crystal Pite, Bobbi Jene Smith & Or Schraiber and Medhi Walerski, as well as Gauthier Dance Company's presentation of ELEMENTS at the Maestranza in Seville in April 2026. Mondigromax SL is a private company. Its founder, Dietrich Grosse, remains its driving force. Before founding Mondigromax, Grosse trained as a dancer and cultural manager, studying at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin and the Université Paris-Dauphine. In 1986 he co-founded Lanonima Imperial with Juan Carlos García, described as the first male contemporary dance company in Barcelona, and served as its manager and executive producer until 2001, when he established Mondigromax.

History

Mondigromax, cultivos de cultura was born in 2001 by the initiative of Dietrich Grosse, acting as a link between the artistic concerns of creators and the realisation of their works. The company was established to accommodate under one roof the various branches of Grosse's interests and passions, together with Montse Majench's vital complicity and emotional support. Its purpose was to promote new opera and dance creations on stage and, in parallel, to accompany dance and ballet companies from around the world in search of new theatres or festivals where they could find new audiences. The founder's background shaped the company's identity. Dietrich Grosse, a German long living in Barcelona since 1979, followed in the footsteps of master Andrzej Leparski, who taught mime and body movement at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, a centre that attracted young people from all over Europe in the 1980s and where creators who later became world-renowned artists, such as La Fura dels Baus, also trained. In this environment Grosse obtained a Bachelor of Dramatic Arts as well as a Higher Degree in Dance. As a result of the Cultural Olympiad, he went to Berlin in 1993, a few years after the fall of the Wall, where he graduated as a cultural manager at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler". He completed his training with a course in Economie et Financement de la Culture at Paris-Dauphine University, invited by the French Ministry of Culture. Proud to say "I was dancer", he took part in numerous choreographic works and, together with Juan Carlos García, founded Lanonima Imperial in 1986. At the time, it was the first male contemporary dance company in Barcelona, and its choreographies were innovative and surprising, achieving a certain success. Grosse then went from dancer to manager and executive producer of Lanonima Imperial until 2001, when he founded Mondigromax. From its base in Barcelona, Mondigromax developed a dual activity: producing and promoting new opera and dance creations, and touring international dance and ballet companies. Over the years it has worked with a wide roster of companies and artists, including Gauthier Dance Company – Theaterhaus Stuttgart, Israel Galván, Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, Meg Stuart – Damaged Goods, Sasha Waltz & Guests, Ballett der Semperoper Dresden, Iceland Dance Company, Quasar Cia. de Dança, Sebastian Weber Dance Company, NND:Galili Dance, Aterballetto, Balé da Cidade de São Paulo, Sydney Dance Company, Ballet Gulbenkian, Ballet BC, Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg and Wiener Staatsballett. It has also been involved in opera productions at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Polish National Opera, Opernhaus Halle, Nationaltheater Mannheim and Neuköllner Oper Berlin, among others. Its touring activity has taken it to venues and festivals across Europe, the Americas and Australia. In recent years the company has continued to announce new tours and productions, such as Ballet BC's debut in Winterthur, Switzerland in September 2026 and its Austrian performances of works by Crystal Pite, Bobbi Jene Smith & Or Schraiber and Medhi Walerski, as well as Gauthier Dance Company's presentation of ELEMENTS at the Maestranza in Seville in April 2026. Mondigromax SL remains a private company based in Barcelona, with Dietrich Grosse as its driving force.
