History

The Molinological Society of Ukraine was established on 15 October 2009 during the First International Scientific Conference "History of Ukrainian Traditional Milling," held in Cherkasy. The initiative came from Williem van Bergen, president of the International Molinological Society (TIMS), and was supported by conference participants. The conference brought together ethnographers, archaeologists, architects, and museum workers from various regions of Ukraine, including Zakarpattia, Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Poltava, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Kyiv, and Cherkasy regions. Scientists from the Czech Republic, France, and Canada also sent reports, and representatives of molinological structures from Western Europe and America participated. Among those who arrived in Cherkasy were TIMS president William van Bergen (Germany) and Ton Meesters and Leo van der Drift, members of the Dutch molinological association. The World Organization for the Protection of Industrial Heritage (TICCIH) also joined the work. In total, more than fifty researchers representing 26 institutions, establishments, and scientific centers took part. A decision was made to create the All-Ukrainian Molinological Association and its regional representations. TIMS representatives offered the leadership of the newly created organization permanent membership in the International Molinological Society and invited Ukrainian colleagues to fruitful cooperation. The conference unanimously supported ideas to appeal to central and local authorities, scientific institutions, and socio-political organizations with a request to register windmills discovered on the territory of Ukraine as monuments of folk architecture and life; to jointly fill the regional pages of the website "Mlyny Ukrainy"; and to identify and establish connections with, and if necessary provide all possible support to, those masters who could be conditionally united into the "school of modern milling of Ukraine." The association's first tasks were to found the scientific publication "Ukrainian Molinological Journal" and to create and fill the website "Mlyny Ukrainy." A task was also set to create, together with the Cherkasy regional television and radio company "ROS," a series of programs called "Pilgrim," dedicated to covering information about milling monuments in various regions: "Odyntsivskyi Mlyn," "Windmills of Shpolianshchyna," "Windmills of Kanivshchyna," "The Last Dutchman," "Watermills of Eastern Podillia," and a special episode of the program "Good News" on the ICTV channel. According to its statute, the Ukrainian Molinological Association's structure corresponds to the administrative-territorial division and consists of 25 organizations. The society maintains a website at mills.org.ua and is a member of TIMS.
