Overview

Molí de Gósol is a former flour mill that has been converted into a mountain refuge (refugi de muntanya) in the municipality of Gósol, in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, Spain. The building is included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia (Inventari del Patrimoni Arquitectònic de Catalunya). It is located 1.4 km south of Gósol, right beside the Riu de Torrentsenta. The mill of the village of Gósol is a rectangular building covered with a gable roof, with the ridge parallel to the west façade. On this same façade there is a rectangular body placed perpendicularly to the mill structure, also covered with a gable roof. Both constructions date from the same period and housed the miller's dwelling and the storage and flour-milling dependencies. Both are ground floor plus upper floor, with walls of large unworked stones joined with abundant mortar and openings highlighted by plastered frames, most of them low arches. As of November 2018, it is owned by the Ajuntament de Gósol (Gósol Town Council). The main L-shaped building is divided into three floors. The top floor, where the dormitories are located, is divided into bunk-bed rooms of 6, 8 and 10 places (the refuge has capacity for 24 people). On the main floor, to the left, there is a living room with fireplace, a reading corner, a piano, and the family's private rooms. On the right side, there is another small dining room and the kitchen. The toilets and showers are located on the lower floor, together with a private kitchen. Its location makes it a starting point for excursions to different points in the comarca: towards Pedraforca, the Serra de Cadí, the Serra del Verd, and Ensija. It is also a starting point for routes such as the Camí dels Bons Homes (GR 107), the Ruta del Caracremada, the Camí de Picasso, and the Volta al Cadí (GR 150). The refuge operates with renewable energies: electricity is 100% solar and heating is by wood stoves. Meals consist of local foods, food from its own garden, as well as potatoes and black peas of its own production. For recycling, waste separation is carried out, and composting of the organic fraction.

History

The flour mills of Gósol have been documented since 1291, owned by the barons of Pinós, who collected one-sixth of the barley they milled. The mill of the village was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century or the beginning of the 18th century and still preserves a good part of the mill mechanisms. In its beginnings the mill had been used as a flour producer, and later as a generator of electricity. At the end of the 20th century, during the 1980s, it was restored, repairing the walls, plastering the frames of the openings and restoring the roofs. As of November 2018, it is owned by the Ajuntament de Gósol. The building is included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. It now operates as a mountain refuge with capacity for 24 people, using renewable energy and serving local food.
