Overview

Modertrans Poznań is a Polish rail-vehicle engineering company based in Poznań and associated with the city-owned public-transport system. It develops, manufactures, modernizes, repairs, regenerates and services trams and other rail vehicles, while also undertaking selected bus-related work and specialist components such as bogies. The company is a subsidiary of MPK Poznań, the municipal transport operator, and grew out of the combination of two existing repair capabilities: MPK Poznań’s Tram Repair Department and the Bus Repair Plant in Biskupice. The legal entity was formed on 31 December 2005, with MPK Poznań holding the dominant shareholding and the Biskupice bus-repair operation holding the minority stake. Modertrans initially built its business around the modernization and reconstruction of established tram types, particularly the Moderus Alfa family. This approach allowed Polish transport operators to extend the useful life of existing vehicles while improving their technical condition, passenger environment and operational performance. Early contracts were concentrated in Poznań, but the company soon supplied or refurbished vehicles for operators in other Polish cities, including Gdańsk, Wrocław, Elbląg, Szczecin and the Silesian network. Its activities expanded beyond complete vehicles into bogie design and manufacture, vehicle refurbishment, training trams, historical restorations and technical support. The company’s product portfolio later broadened from rebuilt high-floor vehicles to partially and fully low-floor trams. The Moderus Beta line represented an important stage in this development, while the Gamma programme, developed with Poznań University of Technology and supported in part through public research funding, targeted a modern low-floor platform. The Moderus Gamma LF 05 AC, presented in 2021, was described as Poland’s first fully low-floor single-section tram. Modertrans also entered the railway-vehicle repair market in 2021 after winning a contract to repair a damaged EN76 electric multiple-unit vehicle for Koleje Wielkopolskie. Modertrans operates as an industrial and engineering supplier rather than a mass-market consumer brand. Its customers are municipal transport companies, regional rail operators and public-sector transport authorities. The company’s competitive proposition combines knowledge of legacy Polish tram fleets with design, production and maintenance capabilities. Its work ranges from major overhauls and accident repairs to new vehicle production and specialist rolling-stock components. The firm has exhibited at industry events including InnoTrans in Berlin and the Trako railway fair in Poland, where its engineering work has received industry recognition. The company’s history includes a shift from a locally focused repair organization to a broader rolling-stock manufacturer and service provider. It delivered its 100th tram in 2010 and its 200th vehicle in 2014. Modertrans has remained closely connected to Poznań’s municipal transport infrastructure, while its contracts and vehicle families have given it a presence across several Polish networks. Its long-term direction has included low-floor vehicle development, research cooperation, rail-vehicle repair and continued modernization of existing fleets.

History

Modertrans Poznań originated in the municipal transport maintenance system of Poznań. A Bus Repair Plant was created within MPK Poznań in 1988, and a dedicated Bus Repair Plant in Biskupice was established in 1998 to perform major repairs for buses from Poznań and other cities. MPK Poznań also maintained a separate tram-repair capability. These activities were consolidated on 31 December 2005 when the Biskupice plant and MPK’s Tram Repair Department were merged into the new Modertrans Poznań company. At formation, MPK Poznań held approximately three quarters of the company’s shares, while the Biskupice operation held the remainder. The new organization began operating with employees transferred from both predecessor units. Andrzej Bręczewski became its first chief executive and played a central role in establishing the company’s manufacturing and engineering identity. Modertrans’s first years were focused on tram production and modernization. In 2006 it delivered Moderus Alfa HF 02 DK and HF 01 vehicles to MPK Poznań. The company introduced a new corporate logo in 2007 and obtained authorization for its MT-01H bogie. It also supplied a training tram, restored historic 105N vehicles and delivered bogies for Protram trams operated by MPK Wrocław. Its work at the Trako fair brought recognition for the MT-01H bogie through the Ernest Malinowski award. In 2008 and 2009 the company increased its industrial capacity. It completed additional Moderus Alfa variants for Poznań, began construction of a warehouse and a new production hall at Biskupice, and expanded and modernized its office and logistics facilities. In 2009, the first Moderus Beta MF 01 tram was delivered to Gdańsk’s transport operator. The company also began appearing at major transport exhibitions, including InnoTrans in Berlin and Trako in Poland, helping it present itself as more than a local repair workshop. The delivery of the 100th tram in 2010 marked a significant production milestone. Modertrans also supplied three Moderino trains for Poznań Zoo. During the following years it continued to participate in transport-industry fairs and supplied or modernized vehicles for operators in several Polish cities. In 2013 it received recognition for the MT-08T 1435 bogie, developed for Siemens Combino trams. The company reached its 200th manufactured vehicle in 2014 with a tram produced for Szczecin. Around the same period it began developing a new low-floor tram in cooperation with Poznań University of Technology. The project was intended to move Modertrans toward a more modern, indigenous tram platform, with part of the development supported by Poland’s National Centre for Research and Development. The resulting Gamma concept was presented in 2016. In 2017 Modertrans signed its first contract for single-section partially low-floor trams, supplying three vehicles to Elbląg. The company continued to combine new construction with reconstruction, servicing and specialized repair work. In 2020 Bręczewski died, ending the founding executive’s tenure. In 2021 Modertrans broadened its rail-market activities by winning a contract for post-accident repair of the EN76-035 electric multiple unit for Koleje Wielkopolskie. In the same year it presented the Moderus Gamma LF 05 AC, a prototype fully low-floor single-section tram. MPK Poznań also initiated a consulting tender concerning a potential sale of its shares, although the available reference material does not establish that a sale occurred.
