Overview
MZV Moderner Zeitschriften Vertrieb GmbH & Co. KG is a German national distributor of magazines and press products, headquartered in Unterschleißheim near Munich. Founded in 1979 by Michael Imhoff in Eching, the company grew from a small operation with seven employees and ten magazine titles into one of the country's leading press distributors. It distributes more than 500 titles for roughly 110 publishing clients and, according to its own figures, held an 18.5% market share as a press supplier in 2009, including 18.8% in the special-interest segment at railway stations. MZV's core business is the efficient distribution and disposition of magazine portfolios. Its network covers around 70,000 retail businesses and approximately 350 bookshops at railway stations and airports that are supplied with magazines. The company positions itself as the market leader in media distribution, offering publishers sales controlling, data analytics and disposition tools that reach down to the level of individual points of sale. Its services span single-copy sales through wholesale, station bookshops, export and online channels, as well as sales through specialist retail, reading circles and airlines (on-board copies). Subscription sales are handled through its sister company MZVdirekt. Beyond traditional press distribution, MZV also distributes non-press products such as collectibles and toys that are sold through magazine retail channels. Its subsidiary Partner Medienservices GmbH, a 100% subsidiary, specializes in the distribution of special-interest magazines and non-press products, and is described as the only service provider in Germany offering this distribution service across Europe, managing international goods flows and fulfillment. The sister company Partner Medienverlag publishes handicraft magazines and organizes Nadelwelt, described as Germany's largest consumer trade fair for handicrafts. Ownership has evolved over the decades. In 1986 the company was converted from a GmbH into a GmbH & Co. KG, with the Funke Mediengruppe (then WAZ Group) holding two-thirds and Michael Imhoff as managing partner holding one-third. In 2010 MZV took over the Burda title portfolio, and Burda became a shareholder. The company remains privately held and active, continuing to invest in data analytics, disposition tools and point-of-sale strategies for magazine retail.
History
MZV Moderner Zeitschriften Vertrieb GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1979 by Michael Imhoff in Eching, Germany. In 1980 the company had seven employees, distributed ten magazine titles (including Stereo, Fono Forum, Penthouse German edition, and Off Road), and generated approximately 10 million DM in revenue. In 1986 the company was converted from a GmbH into a GmbH & Co. KG; at that time the Funke Mediengruppe (then WAZ Group) held two-thirds of the shares, while Michael Imhoff, as managing partner, held one-third. In 1987 MZV took over the distribution of Welt am Sonnabend and built up a publisher-independent field sales structure. That same year Michael Imhoff was appointed to the board of the Verband Deutscher Zeitschriften Verleger (Association of German Magazine Publishers). In 1988 the company founded MZV Export / Import GmbH & Co. KG. From 1989, during the period of German reunification, MZV participated in opening up the magazine market in the new federal states. In 2006 the company developed PDC (Premium Distribution Concept), a concept aimed at modernizing the business. In 2007 it acquired a majority stake in PARTNER Medienservices GmbH, and in 2010 it took over the Burda title portfolio, which also brought Burda in as a shareholder. The company distributes more than 500 titles and counts around 110 publishers as clients. According to its own figures, it held an 18.5% market share as a press supplier in 2009 and an 18.8% share in the special-interest segment at railway stations. Its business fields include single-copy sales through wholesale, station bookshops, export and online, as well as sales through specialist retail, reading circles and airlines (on-board copies). Subscription sales are handled through its sister company MZVdirekt. MZV also distributes non-press products available through magazine retail.
