Overview
ModelScope (Chinese: 魔搭, literally "magic build/搭") is an open-source AI model community and model-as-a-service platform launched by Alibaba Group, developed under the auspices of Alibaba DAMO Academy and closely tied to Alibaba Cloud. It was introduced in 2022 as a Chinese counterpart to global model hubs such as Hugging Face, aiming to give developers in China a domestic place to discover, download, host and run open-source machine-learning models without depending on overseas infrastructure. The platform aggregates models across a wide range of modalities and tasks — natural language processing, computer vision, speech, multimodal generation, and later large language models and diffusion-based image and video generators. ModelScope offers a model hub with documentation and cards, hosted inference APIs, online notebooks and free or subsidized compute for experimentation, plus tooling for fine-tuning and deploying models. It also hosts datasets and provides SDKs and libraries (notably the ModelScope Python library and Swift fine-tuning toolkit) that let developers pull models and run them locally or in the cloud. ModelScope's positioning is explicitly ecosystem-oriented: it is a distribution channel and community for open models rather than a proprietary model product. That role became strategically important as Chinese AI labs — including Alibaba's own Qwen family, as well as many third-party institutions — released open-weight models. ModelScope became a primary distribution point for those releases, and the platform reports a large and fast-growing developer base, with millions of registered users and a model catalogue in the thousands. Ownership sits within Alibaba Group, and the platform is closely integrated with Alibaba Cloud's AI offerings, functioning as a funnel into cloud compute and model services. It is free for individual developers to use at a basic level, with enterprise and cloud consumption driving commercial value. ModelScope remains an active, expanding platform and is one of the most prominent open-model hubs in China.
History
ModelScope was launched by Alibaba Group in 2022, developed under Alibaba DAMO Academy and positioned as an open model community for Chinese developers. At launch it focused on aggregating pre-trained models across vision, speech and natural language tasks, offering hosted inference and a Python library so that models could be run with a few lines of code — a model-as-a-service approach intended to lower the barrier to applied AI in China. Through 2022 and 2023 the platform expanded its catalogue and tooling, adding datasets, online development environments and free compute quotas for experimentation. The release wave of Chinese open-weight large language models in 2023 gave ModelScope a new and much larger role: it became a primary distribution channel for open model releases from Alibaba and from numerous third-party labs and universities, and the platform's model count and user base grew rapidly. Alibaba's own Qwen (通义千问) open models were published and distributed through ModelScope alongside Alibaba Cloud, tying the community to the group's cloud AI business. ModelScope also released developer tooling, including the Swift fine-tuning framework, to make adapting and deploying open models easier. By the mid-2020s ModelScope had become one of the largest open-model hubs in China, with a catalogue in the thousands of models and millions of registered developers, and it continued to add multimodal and generative capabilities as those model classes matured. The platform remains an active Alibaba Group property integrated with Alibaba Cloud's AI stack.
