Mobico Group

Mobico Group, formerly National Express Group, is a British multinational public transport company headquartered in Birmingham, England. Its roots lie in the creation of a unified National-branded scheduled coach network by the state-owned National Bus Company in 1972. The National Express name began appearing on services in 1974, and subsequently became the principal consumer brand of a much broader transport group. Following the privatisation of the National Bus Company, the business underwent a management buyout in 1988 and pursued an expansion strategy spanning local buses, airports, intercity coaches, school transportation and passenger rail. National Express floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1992. During the 1990s and 2000s it acquired or operated businesses in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and continental Europe, including railway franchises such as Gatwick Express, Midland Mainline, Central Trains, ScotRail, c2c and National Express East Coast. The group’s international expansion included the acquisition of major Spanish operator ALSA and later Continental Auto, creating a substantial Iberian and European coach and bus presence. In North America, its school transportation operations became a significant part of the portfolio. The company also developed regional rail activities in Germany and maintained bus, coach and transit operations in several other countries. The group’s 2009 failure to continue funding the National Express East Coast rail franchise was a major strategic and financial setback. The franchise was returned to the United Kingdom government and entered public operation, while National Express subsequently raised capital and refocused its portfolio. The company continued to acquire selected bus and coach businesses, including Clarkes of London and Lucketts Travel, while exiting or restructuring other activities. In 2023, the corporate group changed its name from National Express Group to Mobico Group. Mobico’s history began in 1972, when the National Bus Company consolidated scheduled coach services operated by its constituent companies. The National Express identity was introduced in 1974. Sir Frederick Wood supervised the creation of the new model and served as chairman until 1978. The business was affected by the privatisation of the National Bus Company in the 1980s and became the subject of a management buyout in March 1988. Early diversification included the purchase of Crosville Wales, although deteriorating financial performance led to a management change in 1991 and a subsequent refocusing on core transport activities. Speedlink, an airport coach operator, was acquired that year. National Express Group plc was listed on the London Stock Exchange in December 1992. The 1990s brought rapid expansion. The group acquired Scottish Citylink, Eurolines, East Midlands Airport, West Midlands Travel and Taybus Public Transport, the latter becoming Travel Dundee. It entered UK rail franchising in 1996 with Gatwick Express and Midland Mainline, then added Silverlink, Central Trains and ScotRail. The group also built a US school transportation business through acquisitions including Crabtree-Harmon, Robinson Bus Service and Durham Transportation. In 1999, National Express acquired Australia’s National Bus Company and won Victorian rail franchises including M>Train, M>Tram and V/Line Passenger. It expanded in the United States through ATC in 2000 and added Prism Rail’s UK franchises. The Victorian rail businesses were surrendered in 2002 after negotiations over financial terms failed, and Australian bus operations were progressively sold between 2004 and 2005. European expansion accelerated with the acquisition of most of ALSA in 2005 and Continental Auto in 2007. These transactions established a major Spanish, Portuguese, Moroccan and international coach platform. In the United Kingdom, the company acquired London bus and coach operations, launched the unsuccessful Dot2Dot airport shuttle, and sought to present its different activities under a more unified National Express identity. National Express East Coast began operating the InterCity East Coast franchise in December 2007. The franchise had been won with an ambitious premium commitment, but revenue weakness, economic conditions, fuel costs and the group’s financial exposure placed severe pressure on the business. In 2009 National Express declined to provide further funds; the government took the franchise into public ownership in November. The episode prompted criticism of rail franchising and contributed to takeover interest from FirstGroup, a Cosmen/CVC consortium and Stagecoach, none of which resulted in a completed acquisition. During the 2010s the group developed rail operations in Germany, added bus and coach businesses, and continued international operations. It acquired Clarkes of London in 2016 and Lucketts Travel in 2020. In 2021 it pursued a proposed combination with Stagecoach, but that transaction was abandoned. The company later reorganised its portfolio and, in 2023, changed its corporate name to Mobico Group. National Express continues as a major operating brand, while Mobico represents the listed parent and its wider international mobility portfolio.
