MOBA (formally Moravská Bastei MOBA, s.r.o.) is a Czech book publisher based in Brno, founded on 27 September 1991 as a company with foreign participation, with the German publisher Bastei Lübbe AG of Cologne as its partner. It began operations by publishing pulp novel booklets and from 1992 also published books. It is one of the five largest private Czech publishing houses and, according to the 2017 Report on the Czech Book Market, was the third-largest Czech publisher by number of titles issued, after Albatros Media and Euromedia Group. The house publishes across many genres and editions, including historical novels, crime and detective fiction, non-fiction, science fiction, fantasy, comics, social novels, world, Czech and Slovak fiction, advice books, and books for children and young people. It continues to issue novel booklets covering westerns, social novels, women's fiction, non-fiction, medical novels, crime and horror. Since 2011 it has also published electronic books, now typically released for every printed title and often earlier, with audiobooks for selected titles. MOBA is particularly associated with Czech crime writing. Its "Původní česká detektivka" (Original Czech Detective Fiction) edition, launched in 2000, is described as the most extensive domestic edition of its kind; by April 2019 it had published detective novels by 76 Czech authors with a total print run of over one million copies. The publisher runs a literary competition for Czech-language detective novel writers called "O poklad byzantského kupce", named after Václav Erben's 1964 detective novel. It has published more than 8,000 titles by over a thousand authors from around the world, adding nearly 400 titles a year, and employs roughly 20 people. It has been an active member of the Union of Czech Booksellers and Publishers since 1991.
History
MOBA was founded on 27 September 1991 as Moravská Bastei MOBA, s.r.o., with its registered office in Brno (file number C 2585 at the Regional Court in Brno), as a company with foreign participation whose partner is the major German publisher Bastei Lübbe AG, headquartered in Cologne. The publisher began its activity by issuing novel booklets, and from 1992 it also published books. It has been an active member of the professional organization the Union of Czech Booksellers and Publishers since 1991. The house grew into one of the largest publishing companies in the Czech Republic. It has published more than 8,000 titles by over a thousand authors from around the world, with nearly 400 titles added each year. According to the Report on the Czech Book Market (2017), it was the third-largest Czech publisher by number of titles issued, after Albatros Media and Euromedia Group; it issued 359 titles in 2014, 361 in 2015 and 371 in 2016. Initially the publisher mainly issued foreign authors, but the share of Czech authors grew over time until it exceeded half of annual production. A defining development was the launch in 2000 of the "Původní česká detektivka" (Original Czech Detective Fiction) edition. The first book in the edition was Trable anglického šlechtice v Čechách by Václav Erben, the doyen of the genre, featuring the gallant and elegant Captain Exner. The edition went on to publish other renowned authors of the genre, including Josef Škvorecký, Zdena Salivarová, Hana Prošková, Eva Kačírková, Inna Rottová and Rudolf Ströbinger, as well as many authors who were just starting out at the time of publication. It is described as the most extensive domestic edition of its kind; by April 2019 it had published detective novels by 76 Czech authors with a total print run of over one million copies. Some of the books were adapted for film, for example Na vlky železa (2008, directed by Petr Slavík) and Bláznova smrt and Poslední pád mistra Materny (2017, with Michal Dlouhý in the lead role of Captain Exner). Other stories were written based on real criminal cases. From 2011 the publisher also began issuing electronic books. E-books are now published for every printed book, usually earlier, and audiobooks are produced for selected titles. The publisher also runs a literary competition for Czech-language detective novel writers called "O poklad byzantského kupce", named after Václav Erben's 1964 detective novel, which was also filmed in 1966. The house employs approximately 20 people.
