Overview

MKT Krankentransport Schmitt/Obermeier OHG, commonly known as MKT, is a private emergency medical services and patient transport company headquartered in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. Founded on 23 October 1985 by Robert Schmitt and Werner Obermeier, MKT was the first private provider to enter the patient transport sector in Bavaria, breaking the monopoly of public aid organizations. The company began with a single patient transport to a Munich clinic and has since grown into the largest private provider of rescue services and patient transport in Bavaria, and one of the largest in Germany. MKT operates a comprehensive range of services including emergency rescue, patient transport, medical repatriation from abroad, ambulance services for the on-call medical service, medical training and education, and medical support for reception centers. The company is integrated into the public emergency services system in Bavaria and participates in disaster protection through its non-profit association, the Medizinisches Katastrophen-Hilfswerk e.V. (MHW). As of September 2025, the MKT group employs approximately 1,290 people across its subsidiaries and locations in Bavaria, including Munich, Augsburg, Dachau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Ingolstadt, Nuremberg, Rosenheim, Anzing, and Glonn. The group includes subsidiaries such as Bäuerle Ambulanz in Augsburg and Ambulanz Rosenheim, as well as the MKT-Institut für Notfallmedizin- und Katastrophenschutzausbildung, which provides training in emergency medicine and disaster protection. MKT has been involved in several controversies regarding the awarding of emergency service contracts, particularly where it competes with established aid organizations like the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK). Despite these challenges, MKT has secured long-term contracts and continues to expand its services, including innovative offerings such as online and in-person courses for private crisis preparedness and specialized training for authorities and businesses.

History

MKT Krankentransport was founded on 23 October 1985 by Robert Schmitt and Werner Obermeier as a BGB-Gesellschaft under the name MKT Krankentransportservice München. The company began with the transport of its first patient to a Munich clinic, opening the patient transport sector in Bavaria to private providers as an alternative to public aid organizations. In July 1988, the company was registered in the commercial register as MKT Krankentransport Schmitt/Obermeier OHG. In 1988, MKT entered emergency rescue with the opening of the Munich-Mitte rescue station. The following year, a rescue station was opened in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In 1991, MKT provided a round-the-clock emergency doctor service in Munich and moved its headquarters to Reichenhaller Strasse. In 1992, the Munich-Nord rescue station opened. In 1993, Ambulanz Rosenheim was integrated into the MKT group, and a patient transport station opened in Donauwörth. In 1995, rescue stations opened in Augsburg and Munich-Mitte. In 1997, a rescue station opened in Nuremberg. In 1998, the rescue service was integrated into the public system, and rescue stations opened in Munich-Unterföhring and Munich-Allach. Bäuerle Ambulanz was also integrated, and MKT was appointed to the emergency command service of the City of Munich (ELRD). On 1 July 1999, MKT was fully integrated into the public rescue service, which meant handing over emergency medical responsibility to the City of Munich. In 2001, the patient transport station in Landsberg am Lech moved to Dachau. In 2002, a patient transport station opened in Ingolstadt. In 2004, the Munich-Mitte rescue station moved to the German Heart Centre, and the Brannenburg rescue station moved to a new, self-built rescue centre in Flintsbach. In 2005, MKT entered disaster protection by founding the Medizinisches Katastrophen-Hilfswerk e.V. (MHW). In the 2020s, MKT sold its shares in regional patient transport companies, including Tirol Ambulanz Rettungsdienst und Krankentransport GmbH and KTS Krankentransport Stuttgart GmbH. As of September 2025, the MKT group employs approximately 1,290 people including subsidiaries. The company is considered one of the largest private patient transport and rescue service providers in Germany and the largest private provider in southern Germany, where the Bavarian Red Cross traditionally handles rescue services and patient transport. MKT is particularly present in Bavaria, with locations in Munich (headquarters, several rescue stations), Anzing, Augsburg, Dachau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Glonn, and Ingolstadt. The group includes Bäuerle Ambulanz in Augsburg, Ambulanz Rosenheim, and the MKT-Institut für Notfallmedizin- und Katastrophenschutzausbildung in Munich. There is also close cooperation with Tirol Ambulanz GmbH in Reutte, Austria, which operates as an independent partner for cross-border patient transport after the sale of shares. In its early years, MKT often had to fight for access to public rescue services and patient transport in court. MKT is active not only in patient transport and rescue services but also in areas typical of aid organizations such as public training, medical services, and disaster protection.
