Overview
Miyazaki Factory Co., Ltd. (株式会社宮崎ファクトリー) is a Japanese apparel manufacturer headquartered in Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture, specializing in the production of men's and women's suits. It was established on September 8, 2020, by three subcontracting companies — Family Sewing, Nichinan Family Sewing, and Nichinan Trois Sewing — as the practical successor to D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing, which had filed for civil rehabilitation after its parent Renown went bankrupt in 2020. The new company took over the same factory site and production equipment and re-employed some former D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing workers. The company continues the tradition of suit-making that began in 1974, when D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing started operations as a sewing factory for the Renown group's D'URBAN brand. Miyazaki Factory produces suits for the Japanese body shape, emphasizing rounded, three-dimensional silhouettes and comfort. Its factory carries out all processes in-house, from production control, CAD design, cutting, sewing, finishing, inspection, to shipping, using advanced equipment and skilled craftsmanship. The company also operates a "Fashion Room" for personal orders, offering made-to-measure suits with a choice of about 400 fabrics and over 20 lining and button options, with delivery in about two to three weeks. Miyazaki Factory's main client is Oggi International, a subsidiary of Koizumi that acquired the Aquascutum and D'URBAN brands from Renown, which entrusts production to Miyazaki Factory. The company also aims to develop its own brand products. In December 2020, Miyazaki Prefecture certified Miyazaki Factory as a location company, and the company signed an industrial location agreement with Nichinan City, marking the start of full operations. As of the 2023 fiscal year (ending August 2023), the company reported annual sales of 1.4 billion yen and employed 200 people including partner factories (46 at Miyazaki Factory itself).
History
The origins of Miyazaki Factory lie in D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing Co., Ltd., which began operations in June 1974 as a sewing factory for the Renown group's D'URBAN brand. For decades it manufactured high-quality men's suits, contributing to Renown's reputation for Japanese-made clothing. However, in May 2020, Renown filed for bankruptcy, and D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing's claims against Renown became uncollectible. On June 5, 2020, D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing applied for civil rehabilitation. No sponsor emerged, and the factory's real estate and equipment were transferred to three subcontractors: Family Sewing, Nichinan Family Sewing, and Nichinan Trois Sewing. D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing itself received a decision to discontinue civil rehabilitation proceedings on August 31, 2020. The three subcontractors then established Miyazaki Factory Co., Ltd. on September 8, 2020, to take over the business. Partial operations began on September 23, 2020, at the same site, using the same production equipment, and re-employing some former D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing workers. Oggi International, a subsidiary of Koizumi that had acquired the Aquascutum and D'URBAN brands from Renown, recognized the technical capabilities of the former D'URBAN Miyazaki Sewing and entrusted production to Miyazaki Factory. On December 22, 2020, Miyazaki Prefecture officially certified Miyazaki Factory as a location company, and the company signed an industrial location agreement with Nichinan City, commencing full operations. Since then, Miyazaki Factory has continued to produce suits for Oggi International while also developing its own brand products, aiming to become Japan's top suit factory.
