Overview

Miyagi Consumers' Co-operative Society (みやぎ生活協同組合, Miyagi Seikatsu Kyōdō Kumiai), commonly known as Miyagi Co-op, is a Japanese consumer co-operative headquartered in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. It was formed in 1982 through the merger of the Miyagi Prefectural School Co-op and the Miyagi Prefectural Citizens' Co-op, and today operates supermarkets, home delivery services, and community facilities across Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures. As of the fiscal year ending March 2020, it had approximately 950,000 members in Miyagi Prefecture, representing a household membership rate of 75.1% — the highest among all co-ops in Japan — and 29.2% in the Fukushima area. Its supply volume exceeded 125.9 billion yen, making it the largest consumer co-operative in the Tohoku region. The co-op is a member of the Co-op Tohoku Sunnet Business Federation. Beyond retail, Miyagi Co-op is involved in wind power generation, restaurant operations, and financial consulting services. It has also expanded through mergers, notably absorbing Co-op Fukushima and Fukushima Minami Co-op in 2019, extending its operations into Fukushima Prefecture. The organization is known for its high membership penetration, community engagement, and innovative services such as electronic receipts and prepaid cards.

History

The Miyagi Consumers' Co-operative Society was established on March 21, 1982, through the merger of the Miyagi Prefectural School Co-op (founded in 1952) and the Miyagi Prefectural Citizens' Co-op (founded in 1970). The school co-op traced its origins to a purchasing association formed by school teachers in 1947. In 1992, Miyagi Co-op joined with Iwate Co-op and Co-op Kyoritsusha to form the Co-op Tohoku Sunnet Business Federation. The co-op began individual home delivery in September 1996 and launched an internet ordering system in September 2000. In June 2009, it became the first co-op in Japan to charge for plastic bags at all stores. In May 2012, it introduced the MiiCA prepaid card in collaboration with Nissenren Life Service. In September 2013, it started a household finance consultation and loan service called 'Kurashi to Kakei no Soudanshitsu'. In November 2014, it launched the 'Smart Receipt' electronic receipt service. In June 2015, it expanded its business area to include Iwate, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima prefectures. In April 2016, it acquired naming rights to the Miyagi Soccer Stadium, renaming it 'Miyagi Co-op Megumino Soccer Stadium'. In October 2016, it entered the restaurant business with 'Costeria' in Sendai, and began issuing integrated MiiCA cards with member ID function. In March 2019, it absorbed Co-op Fukushima and Fukushima Minami Co-op, expanding operations into Fukushima Prefecture. As of March 2020, it operated 54 stores, 17 joint purchasing branches, and 6 school branches. The co-op continues to open 2-3 new stores annually while closing smaller locations.
