Overview

Mittelfränkische Eisenbahnbetriebs GmbH (MEBG) is a railway infrastructure company (Eisenbahninfrastrukturunternehmen) and railway transport company (Eisenbahnverkehrsunternehmen) based in Wilburgstetten, Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany. It is the infrastructure operator of the Nördlingen–Dombühl railway line. The company was founded against the backdrop of plans by the Bavarian Railway Company (Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft) to reintroduce local passenger rail services on the Nördlingen–Dombühl route. Representatives of the Free State of Bavaria and the Ansbach district approached Heino Seeger of Tegernsee-Bahn Betriebsgesellschaft, who took a financial interest in operating the line and, as early as 2017, planned the establishment of a limited liability company under the working title Mittelfränkische Eisenbahnbetriebsgesellschaft. The company was founded by five shareholders through a partnership agreement dated 7 March 2019 with a share capital of EUR 25,000 and its registered office in Feuchtwangen. It was entered in the commercial register at the Ansbach local court on 8 May 2019. On 6 August 2019 it was licensed as both a railway infrastructure undertaking and a railway transport undertaking, and subsequently leased the Nördlingen–Dombühl railway line. On 29 July 2021 the line's main freight customer, Rettenmeier, entered the company through a capital increase of EUR 24,000 via a subsidiary, taking a 49% stake. In 2023 Rettenmeier increased its share to 71.43% through share purchases. In 2024 the company's registered office was moved to the site of the Rettenmeier sawmill in Wilburgstetten. MEBG works on the reactivation of the line between Wilburgstetten and Dombühl and is developing a concept for local passenger rail transport. The renewed impetus for reactivation of the Wilburgstetten–Dombühl section came in 2017 with additional partners, from which today's MEBG emerged.

History

The origins of the Mittelfränkische Eisenbahnbetriebs GmbH (MEBG) lie in plans by the Bavarian Railway Company (Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft) to reintroduce local passenger rail services on the Nördlingen–Dombühl railway line. As early as 2017, under the working title Mittelfränkische Eisenbahnbetriebsgesellschaft, the establishment of a limited liability company was planned with specialists and the necessary capital procurement. The renewed impetus for reactivation of the Wilburgstetten–Dombühl section came in 2017 with additional partners, from which today's MEBG emerged.
