Overview

Mitsubishi Corporation Life Sciences Co., Ltd. (三菱商事ライフサイエンス株式会社) is a Japanese manufacturer of food ingredients, seasonings, food materials and life-science-related products, headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo. It was created on 1 April 2019 by integrating three Mitsubishi Corporation food businesses: MC Food Specialties Inc., Mitsubishi Corporation Foodtech Co., Ltd., and Kojin Life Sciences Co., Ltd. The company describes itself as pursuing "food," "health" and "beauty" through the power of life sciences, contributing to the wellbeing of people and a sustainable global environment. The company's roots reach back to the mid-20th century. Mitsubishi Corporation Foodtech's predecessor, Towa Kasei Kogyo, was established in 1954 and began manufacturing and selling sorbitol; it later added carrageenan from seaweed and other functional food materials. MC Food Specialties traced its origins to a 2001 food-business alliance between Kirin Brewery and Takeda Pharmaceutical, becoming Takeda Kirin Foods in 2002, then Kirin Foodtech, then Kirin Kyowa Foods, before Mitsubishi Corporation acquired roughly 81% in 2013 and made it a wholly owned subsidiary in 2015. Kojin Life Sciences was spun off from Kojin Co., Ltd.'s fermentation business in 2012, with a factory in Saeki dating to 1953. Today Mitsubishi Corporation Life Sciences supplies food manufacturers with seasonings, flavor ingredients, sweeteners, fermentation-derived materials, bakery ingredients and functional food materials. Its consumer-facing heritage includes the long-selling seasoning brand "Inoichiban" (いの一番), described on its website as loved for more than half a century. The company also operates in cosmetics ingredients following the 2020 acquisition of Vitamin C60 BioResearch Corporation, and expanded its seasoning-related raw material lineup in 2021 by taking over part of Dainippon Meiji Sugar's food business. In 2024 it integrated Vitamin C60 BioResearch. It is a consolidated subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation and part of the Mitsubishi Corporation Group.

History

Mitsubishi Corporation Life Sciences was established on 1 April 2019 through the business integration of three companies under the umbrella of Mitsubishi Corporation: MC Food Specialties Inc., Mitsubishi Corporation Foodtech Co., Ltd., and Kojin Life Sciences Co., Ltd. On the same date, the former Mitsubishi Corporation Life Sciences Co., Ltd. — a holding company established in November 2012 — changed its name to Mitsubishi Corporation Life Sciences Holdings Co., Ltd. The three merged businesses each had distinct origins. Mitsubishi Corporation Foodtech's lineage began in June 1954 with the establishment of Towa Kasei Kogyo Co., Ltd., which started manufacturing and selling sorbitol. In April 1977, production of carrageenan, a seaweed extract, began at Chuo Kasei Co., Ltd.'s Banshu plant. In March 1991, Yoshioka Co., Ltd. established Yoshioka Engineering for the design, manufacture and sale of food processing machinery; it changed business to additive manufacturing in 1992 and became Yoshioka Food Mix in 1993, then Yoshioka Foodtech in 1999. In April 2000, the functional food materials divisions of Chuo Kasei and Banshu Chemical were separated and combined to form Chuo Foods Material Co., Ltd. In August 2003, Yoshioka Foodtech changed its name to MC Foodtech Co., Ltd. In August 2007, Towa Kasei Kogyo, MC Foodtech and Chuo Foods Material merged to become Mitsubishi Corporation Foodtech Co., Ltd. MC Food Specialties traced its roots to December 2001, when Kirin Brewery Co., Ltd. and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited reached a basic agreement on a food business alliance. In April 2002, Takeda Kirin Foods Co., Ltd. was established and began operations, taking over Takeda Pharmaceutical's food business. In April 2005, Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co., Ltd.'s food business was spun off as Kyowa Hakko Foods Co., Ltd. In April 2007, Kirin Brewery made Takeda Kirin Foods a wholly owned subsidiary and renamed it Kirin Foodtech Co., Ltd. In April 2009, Kyowa Hakko Foods and Kirin Foodtech merged to form Kirin Kyowa Foods Co., Ltd. In July 2010, the company integrated Mercian Corporation's industrial alcohol and fermented seasoning business. In July 2013, Mitsubishi Corporation acquired approximately 81% of the shares, making it a subsidiary within the Mitsubishi Corporation group. In January 2014, it changed its name to MC Food Specialties Inc. In January 2015, Mitsubishi Corporation acquired the shares held by Kirin Holdings Company, Limited, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. Kojin Life Sciences began in April 1953, when the Saeki plant started operation as a dissolving pulp factory of Kokoku Rayon Pulp Co., Ltd. In January 1969, the company changed its name to Kojin Co., Ltd. In November 2012, Kojin Co., Ltd.'s fermentation business was separated by company split to establish Kojin Life Sciences Co., Ltd. After the 2019 integration, the company continued to expand. In April 2020, it received a transfer of shares from Mitsubishi Corporation and made Vitamin C60 BioResearch Corporation — which develops, manufactures and sells cosmetic ingredients — a subsidiary, launching its cosmetics business. In April 2021, it took over part of Dainippon Meiji Sugar Co., Ltd.'s food business, expanding its lineup of seasoning-related raw materials. In April 2024, Vitamin C60 BioResearch Corporation was integrated into the company. The company continues to present itself as pursuing food, health and beauty through life sciences, with a portfolio spanning seasonings, food materials, sweeteners, bakery ingredients and cosmetic ingredients.
