Overview

Mitchell's Ice Cream is a family-owned ice cream parlor in San Francisco, opened on June 6, 1953, by brothers Larry and Jack Mitchell. It is known for its super-premium ice cream made with 16% butterfat, featuring over 40 daily flavors, including tropical flavors like mango. The business has been recognized as 'Best In The Bay' by SF Gate and Modern Luxury Living's San Francisco Magazine in 2025.

History

The Mitchell family moved to San Francisco from New York in 1865 and started a small dairy farm. In 1952, brothers Larry and Jack Mitchell decided to start their own business in the empty storefront of the family's apartment building. They opened Mitchell's Ice Cream on June 6, 1953, with the goal of making the best ice cream in San Francisco. They started with nineteen flavors, all made with 16% butterfat cream. In the early 1960s, they introduced Mango ice cream to the Bay Area, which became their number one seller. The business is still owned and operated by the Mitchell family today.
