Overview

Misioner (Видавництво «Місіонер») is the publishing house and printing press of the Basilian Fathers (Order of Saint Basil the Great) in Lviv, Ukraine. Its origins trace to 1895, when a printing press was opened at the Basilian monastery in Zhovkva with the support of Andrey Sheptytsky, then abbot of the Monastery of Saint Onuphrius in Lviv. By 1939 the Zhovkva press had become one of the most important Ukrainian publishing operations in Galicia, issuing scholarly and popular-scholarly works, prayer books and catechisms, and well-known periodicals such as «Місіонар» (founded 1897) and «Рідна Мова». Publishing activity was interrupted after the first Soviet occupation of Galicia in 1939, when the Zhovkva press was nationalized. In 1993 the Lviv regional authorities returned the Zhovkva printing house to the Basilians, and from 1994 books of the Misioner publishing house have again been printed in Zhovkva. Today Misioner operates as a religious and cultural publisher and printer based at 40 B. Khmelnytskyi Street in Lviv. Its catalogue spans philosophical and theological works, historical editions, spiritual literature, prose and poetry of religious character, liturgical books, documents of the Apostolic See (encyclicals, instructions, apostolic letters) and works of ecumenical hierarchs. The official website lists new titles such as «Що таке християнство» (What Is Christianity), «Слово Боже – живе і діяльне» (volume 7 of sermons and speeches), «Місія в оповіданнях» (Book 8), «Святий Франциск і свята Якинта – дві квітки з Фатіми», «Чорна вівця», «Свята Схоластика», «Щоденник. Боже милосердя в моїй душі», «Приготування до смерти», «Молімося до Йосафата. Хорові твори», «Апостоли всехвальні» and a jubilee edition for the 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Josaphat Kuntsevych. Beyond publishing, Misioner offers pre-press and editorial services: computer typesetting and layout, language and literary editing, artistic and technical editing, layout design, cover design, scanning and processing of black-and-white and colour illustrations, colour separation, film output, and translation from English, Italian, German, Polish and Portuguese. The publishing house is led by the Basilian Fathers; its general directors have included Hieromonk Klymentiy Stasiv (2005–2017). Misioner remains a private, church-owned enterprise rather than a commercial listed company, and it serves Ukrainian Catholic and broader Christian readerships in Ukraine and the diaspora.

History

The history of Misioner begins in 1895, when a printing press was opened at the Basilian monastery in Zhovkva (Lviv region) with the support of Andrey Sheptytsky, at that time abbot of the Monastery of Saint Onuphrius in Lviv. The monastery itself had grown out of the Church of the Nativity of Christ. The press quickly became a centre of Ukrainian Catholic publishing in Galicia. In 1897 the Catholic periodical «Місіонар» was founded, and it was accompanied by a children's supplement, «Місіонарчик». The Basilians also printed the scholarly-historical series «Записки ЧСВВ» (Notes of the Order of Saint Basil the Great). In 1926 the press issued the first edition of Dmytro Dontsov's book «Націоналізм» (Nationalism). By 1939 the Zhovkva printing house had become one of the most important Ukrainian publishing operations in Galicia. Its output included a large quantity of liturgical, catechetical and liturgical literature, prose and poetic works of religious content, children's spiritual literature and much else. The press was directed in its early decades by figures such as Herman Bidolakh (1869–1942), a Ukrainian Basilian monk, publisher, printer and prefect and director of the Zhovkva printing house. After the first arrival of the communists in Galicia in 1939, the publishing activity of the Basilian Fathers was interrupted and the Zhovkva printing house was nationalized. For decades the press operated as a state enterprise, and the Basilian publishing tradition was suspended. Only after Ukraine regained independence did the situation change: in 1993 the Lviv regional authorities returned the Zhovkva printing house to the ownership of the Basilians. From 1994 books of the Misioner publishing house have again been printed in Zhovkva. In the post-1994 period the catalogue has focused on philosophical and theological works, historical editions, spiritual literature, prose and poetry of religious content, liturgical literature, documents of the Apostolic See (encyclicals, instructions, apostolic letters) and works of ecumenical hierarchs. The publishing house is based in Lviv at 40 B. Khmelnytskyi Street. From 2005 to 2017 the general director of Misioner in Lviv was Klymentiy Stasiv (born 1973), a Ukrainian Basilian hieromonk, writer, translator and essayist. The press continues to serve Ukrainian Catholic readers and maintains an active list of new titles, including a jubilee edition marking the 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Josaphat Kuntsevych.
