Overview
Mirage Land (ミラージュランド) is an amusement park located in Mikka, Uozu City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. It is part of Uozu Comprehensive Park and is the only amusement park in Toyama Prefecture. The park opened on April 20, 1982. It is operated by the Uozu City Facility Management Public Corporation (一般財団法人魚津市施設管理公社), a public interest incorporated foundation established on January 20, 1982, with its head office at 1181-1 Mikka, Uozu City. The park is adjacent to the Uozu Aquarium. Mirage Land offers a variety of attractions and facilities, including a large Ferris wheel called the Giant Wheel, a seawater pool (Mirage Pool), barbecue areas, park golf, a petting farm, and a lawn plaza. The park operates seasonally from mid-March to the end of November, with Wednesdays as regular closure days (except during Golden Week and pool season). Admission was charged until 2002 but has been free since 2003. The park introduced night operations in 1996 and has offered private evening rentals since 2006. The park's Giant Wheel, completed on April 20, 1991, is 66 meters tall and was one of the largest Ferris wheels in Japan at the time. It was the only Ferris wheel in Toyama Prefecture from 2006 until 2015. The Mirage Pool, completed in August 1983, uses seawater drawn from Toyama Bay. The park also features various rides such as the Bazuuka, Horror House, Mira Maze, Viking, Arabian Merry, and a two-story carousel made by Bertazzon of Italy. Mirage Land has been used as a filming location for movies and as a model for anime, including the 2005 Japanese film "Christmas in August" and the 2006 film "Strawberry Shortcakes." It also appeared as a model for an amusement park in the OVA bundled with volume 0 of the manga "Another" in 2012. The park remains a family-oriented leisure destination in the Hokuriku region.
History
Mirage Land opened on April 20, 1982, as an amusement park within Uozu Comprehensive Park in Uozu City, Toyama Prefecture. It was established as the only amusement park in Toyama Prefecture. The operating entity, the Uozu City Facility Management Public Corporation, was founded on January 20, 1982, with a basic endowment of 30,000 thousand yen. At the time of opening, the park featured a first-generation Ferris wheel called the Wonder Wheel, which was 25 meters tall with 12 gondolas and took 5 minutes per rotation. The park also had a pool with seating next to the entrance gate where dolphin and whale shows were held with the cooperation of Kamogawa Sea World. In August 1983, the Mirage Pool, a seawater pool drawing water from Toyama Bay, was completed. In 1991, the Wonder Wheel was replaced by the Giant Wheel, a 66-meter-tall Ferris wheel purchased from the World Design Exposition held in Nagoya. It was completed on April 20, 1991, and was one of the largest Ferris wheels in Japan at the time. In 1996, the park introduced a two-story merry-go-round made by Bertazzon of Italy, and night operations were conducted for the first time. In 2002, admission was still charged, but from 2003 onward, admission became free. In 2005, the barbecue plaza opened on April 29. In 2006, the park transitioned to a designated manager system, and from the summer of that year, private evening rentals for individuals and groups began. In 2014, the three-dimensional wooden maze Mira Maze opened in March. In 2016, the Water Shooter attraction was introduced in spring. In 2018, the Horror House opened on April 28. In 2020, the Viking and Arabian Merry attractions opened on March 20. In 2021, the Bazuuka opened on July 22. In 2023, the Frog Hopper and Mini Viking were newly installed on April 22, and the Fluffy Dome was added on March 18. The Giant Wheel underwent major renovation in 2024, with 39 of its 40 gondolas repainted red (one remaining gold) and aging parts replaced; it resumed operation on April 20, 2024. The park has been used as a filming location for the 2005 film "Christmas in August" and the 2006 film "Strawberry Shortcakes." It also served as a model for an amusement park in the OVA bundled with volume 0 of the manga "Another" in 2012. The park continues to operate seasonally from mid-March to the end of November, closed on Wednesdays except during Golden Week and pool season.
