Overview

MIPA SE (stylised MIPA SE) is a German manufacturer of paints, lacquers and coating systems headquartered in Essenbach, Bavaria. It is one of the world's largest and most successful family-owned companies in the paint and coatings industry. The Mipa Group operates eight production sites and numerous sales companies, employs around 1,700 people worldwide, and supplies its own subsidiaries as well as partners in over 100 countries on all continents. In 2025 the group generated revenue of EUR 325 million. According to Coatings World, MIPA ranks 45th among paint manufacturers worldwide by revenue, and 15th in Europe according to Farbe und Lack. The company's origins trace back to a paint factory founded in Landshut by Johann Baptist Mittermayer at the beginning of the 20th century. After that facility was destroyed in World War II, the paths of the then managing directors and nephews of the founder separated. MIPA SE itself was founded in 1948 as Paul Mittermayer GmbH by the nephew of the same name. After continuous growth at the Landshut site, the company moved to Essenbach, about 10 km away, in 1995. In 2001 it was converted into MIPA AG, and in 2015 it became MIPA SE, a European public limited company. It remains family-owned and is not listed on the stock exchange. MIPA's core competence is the development and production of high-quality paints for automotive refinishing, industrial applications, wood surfaces and buildings. The product range includes automotive refinish paints, industrial coatings, aerosols, decorative paints, wood lacquers, and painting accessories for professional users. MIPA positions itself as a system provider, supporting customers through all stages of the painting process, from individual products to complex, innovative systems. Its customers are professional paint processors in trade and industry. The company works closely with trade and distribution partners that complement its international network. MIPA is a regular exhibitor at the Automechanika trade fair in Frankfurt, where it has presented digital paint mixing solutions for more than three decades. Recent news includes the start of 20 new apprentices in 2026 and the presentation of water-based coating systems for medical technology. The company emphasises short decision-making paths, market orientation, and flexibility as advantages of its family-owned structure.

History

The history of MIPA SE goes back over 100 years, rooted in the tradition of the founding family dating to 1900. The original paint production began in Landshut in a paint factory founded by Johann Baptist Mittermayer at the beginning of the 20th century. After the Landshut facility built by J. B. Mittermayer was destroyed in World War II, the paths of the then managing directors and nephews of the founder separated. On this path, MIPA SE was founded in 1948 as Paul Mittermayer GmbH by the nephew of the same name, Paul Mittermayer. After continuous growth at the Landshut site, the company moved in 1995 to Essenbach, about 10 km away, which offered forward-looking expansion opportunities. In 2001, Paul Mittermayer GmbH was converted into MIPA AG. The conversion to MIPA SE as a European public limited company (Societas Europaea) took place in 2015. Since then, MIPA SE has existed as a family-owned company without stock exchange listing. The core of the family business is preserved to this day within the globally active MIPA SE, which guarantees short decision-making paths, absolute orientation to market needs and quality requirements, and the necessary flexibility. Key milestones include the expansion of the Mipa site in Landshut in the 1980s, numerous structural extensions between 2012 and 2014, the construction of a high-bay warehouse in 2018, the takeover of Landshuter Lackfabrik GmbH in 2018, and the merger with Landshuter Lackfabrik GmbH in 2021. Today the Mipa Group includes eight production sites and numerous sales companies. With around 1,700 employees, the group is among the world's 100 largest paint manufacturers and continues to grow strongly. In 2025, the group generated revenue of EUR 325 million. According to Coatings World, MIPA ranks 45th in the global revenue ranking of paint manufacturers; in Europe, according to Farbe und Lack, it ranks 15th among the highest-revenue paint manufacturers.
