Overview
Mini was a British small-car marque created around a compact two-door automobile first introduced in 1959. The original car was developed for the British Motor Corporation (BMC) during a period of fuel shortages and changing consumer preferences following the 1956 Suez Crisis. BMC chairman Leonard Lord wanted an economical but fully capable alternative to the small bubble cars that were becoming popular in Britain. Engineer Alec Issigonis led the design, working with a team that included John Sheppard, Jack Daniels, Chris Kingham, Charles Griffin, Vic Everton, Ron Dovey, Dick Gallimore and George Cooper. The production car, internally designated ADO15, adopted an unusually space-efficient layout. Its four-cylinder engine was mounted transversely, the transmission was integrated into the engine sump, and power was sent to the front wheels. The arrangement, combined with wheels positioned at the corners and compact rubber-cone suspension, allowed approximately 80 percent of the floor area to be used for passengers and luggage. The car was only about ten feet long but could accommodate four occupants. Its external door hinges, sliding windows, minimal body structure and subframes also reduced production complexity and made overseas assembly from knock-down kits practical. The vehicle was launched in August 1959 under the Austin and Morris names as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor. In various export markets it was sold as the Austin 850 or Morris 850, among other names. The Austin version was renamed Austin Mini in 1962. Although the car was initially treated as a model within BMC's existing brand system, Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969. The name subsequently covered a broad family of body styles and derivatives, including saloons, estates, vans, pick-ups, convertibles and the Mini Moke utility vehicle. Performance variants added cultural and sporting significance. The Mini Cooper and Cooper S, developed with the involvement of John Cooper, combined the small car's nimble handling with more powerful engines and became successful competition cars. Mini Cooper S versions won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967, helping establish the marque as both a practical urban-car brand and a motorsport icon. The car also became strongly associated with 1960s British popular culture and appeared in films, fashion imagery and celebrity culture. The original design was updated through Mark II, Clubman and Mark III generations or major revisions, while production continued under British Leyland and later the Rover Group. A successor model, the Austin Metro, was introduced in 1980, but the original Mini remained in production. Manufacturing took place principally at Longbridge in Birmingham and Cowley in Oxford, with additional production or assembly in Australia, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Chile, Malta, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay, Venezuela and Yugoslavia. Around 5.38 million examples of the various original Mini versions were built from 1959 to 2000, apart from a short production interruption in the 1990s. BMW acquired the Rover Group's Mini-related assets and the Mini name during the restructuring and sale of Rover in 2000. Production of the original car ended at Longbridge in October 2000. BMW then introduced a substantially larger modern MINI family in 2001. The modern vehicles share the name and some design references but are distinct from the original Classic Mini covered by this article. The original Mini was widely recognized for its engineering influence, and in a 1999 international automotive poll it ranked second among the most influential cars of the twentieth century, behind the Ford Model T.
History
The Mini originated in the economic and political conditions created by the 1956 Suez Crisis, which caused fuel shortages and made large cars less attractive in Britain. Small imported bubble cars gained attention, prompting British Motor Corporation chairman Leonard Lord to request a properly engineered miniature car rather than a lightweight compromise. He specified a vehicle that would fit within a compact envelope while reserving most of its length for passengers. Alec Issigonis, who had returned to BMC in 1955, led the project. His team accelerated work on the smallest of several proposed vehicles, known internally as XC9003 and later ADO15. The first prototype, nicknamed the Orange Box, was approved for production in July 1957. To maximize cabin space, the engineers mounted the A-Series engine transversely and placed the transmission in the engine sump. Front-wheel drive, small ten-inch wheels, corner-mounted wheels and rubber-cone suspension produced a short but stable car with distinctive handling. BMC presented the production version in April 1959 and announced it publicly on 26 August. It was sold through the Austin and Morris dealer networks as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor. The car's low cost, fuel economy and unusually spacious interior made it commercially important, while its direct steering and compact dimensions gave it a character that distinguished it from conventional economy cars. The Austin name was changed to Austin Mini in 1962, and Mini later became a separate marque in 1969. During the 1960s and 1970s, the range expanded beyond the basic saloon. Mark revisions improved the body and interior, while the Clubman introduced a revised front-end treatment and longer-nose variants. Estate, van, pick-up, convertible and recreational versions were offered. The Mini Moke used Mini-derived mechanical components in an open utility body. Production and assembly spread internationally, including facilities or license arrangements in Australia, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Chile, Malta, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay, Venezuela and Yugoslavia. The Cooper and Cooper S versions transformed the model's public image. Developed with racing-car constructor John Cooper, they used more powerful engines and performance upgrades. Their victories in the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967 demonstrated that the small front-wheel-drive car could compete successfully against larger and more powerful rivals. The Mini consequently became a symbol of British ingenuity, youth culture and 1960s design. British Motor Corporation became part of the wider British Leyland structure, and the Mini survived successive corporate reorganizations. The Austin Metro appeared in 1980 as a modern replacement in the small-car market, but the original Mini continued because of its popularity and distinctive identity. Later production was concentrated at Longbridge, with the car receiving further cosmetic and equipment updates. Rover Group eventually secured the Mini design as a trademark, reflecting the extent to which the silhouette had become recognizable independently of its original corporate owners. BMW acquired the Rover Group's Mini-related interests during the late-1990s restructuring and retained the Mini name after Rover was sold in 2000. The final original Minis were produced at Longbridge in October 2000. BMW introduced a new MINI hatchback in 2001, beginning a separate modern product family. The Classic Mini therefore represents the original British car and its derivatives, while modern MINI vehicles belong to BMW's later marque strategy.
