Overview

Mientras Tanto is a Spanish political-cultural and social-science journal founded in 1979 by Giulia Adinolfi and Manuel Sacristán Luzón, with the aim of renewing Marxist left-wing thought. Its original editorial committee included Manuel Sacristán, Giulia Adinolfi, Miguel Candel Sanmartín and Francisco Fernández Buey, many of whom had also contributed to Materiales, another journal directed by Sacristán. In the context of Spain's democratic transition, the publication defended positions close to the political rupture advocated by part of the PSUC and other minority communist groups, as opposed to theses closer to Eurocommunism. The journal's editorial line is expressed through its colours: red for identification with the social and political emancipation projects of the working classes, green for environmentalism, violet for anti-sexism and white for the defence of non-violence. Over time it has evolved to cover other topics of interest to the political left, approached from economic, historical, gender and ecological perspectives. The print edition's frequency has varied: initially bimonthly, later four-monthly. It is currently published with the collaboration of the Fundación Giulia Adinolfi-Manuel Sacristán and Icària Editorial, with two issues per year, preferably monographic. The limited print edition has been compensated by the launch of mientrastanto.e, which has published more than a hundred issues and has become a monthly digital political-cultural magazine. The print journal has ISSN 0210-8259 and the digital version ISSN 2014-7317. Icària Editorial manages subscriptions and orders for the print journal. The official website mientrastanto.org presents the latest issue, such as number 259 of September 2026, with sections including monthly notes, essays, articles from other sources, La Biblioteca de Babel and En la pantalla. Contributors have included Albert Recio Andreu, Marc Andreu Acebal, Eduardo Melero Alonso, Miguel Ángel López Muñoz, Enrique Javier Díez Gutiérrez, Natalia Calvieri, Clarisa Colombari, José A. Estévez Araújo, Antonio Antón, Miguel Urbán, Elke Schwarz, Rafael Poch de Feliu, Luis Duno-Gottberg, Daniel Tanuro, Alberto Garzón Espinosa, Gustavo Duch, Romaric Godin and Henar Alonso Rodríguez. The journal remains an active voice for left-wing, ecological, feminist and anti-militarist debate in the Spanish-speaking world.
