Overview
Midi:Nette M.†.M is a Japanese independent record label and merchandise brand founded in 1991 by the musician, entrepreneur and fashion designer Mana. It was originally created to release the recordings of the visual kei band Malice Mizer, in which Mana was a central member, and it later became the home for other projects including Moi dix Mois and Schwarz Stein. The label is closely associated with the visual kei and gothic scenes, and its catalogue includes CDs, DVDs and related merchandise. The label's early years were dedicated to Malice Mizer, whose debut album Memoire was issued through Midi:Nette. The band remained on the label until 1997, when it moved to a major label, Nippon Columbia. In 1999, after the death of drummer Kami and the departure of vocalist Gackt, Malice Mizer returned to Midi:Nette to regain full control over its activities. When Malice Mizer went on hiatus in 2001, Midi:Nette began releasing the work of Mana's solo project Moi dix Mois from 2002. Around the same time, the musicians Kaya and Hora worked on other projects and caught Mana's attention, leading to a contract with the label; the guitarist, who had studied music production, produced the duo Schwarz Stein, who recorded two albums and two singles before separating in 2004. In more recent years, the main Midi:Nette website was taken offline, leaving only its online sales space. The label's current status has been described as uncertain, as Mana released the last Moi dix Mois album, Reprise, through a new label called Maglaia. Nevertheless, the Midi:Nette Shop continues to operate as an online store offering CDs, DVDs and tour merchandise for Moi dix Mois and Malice Mizer, including items such as picture muffler towels, can badges, light sticks, hand towels, keyholders, rubber coasters and T-shirts. The shop also provides international ordering options through services such as Buyee and CD Japan. As a brand, Midi:Nette M.†.M represents both a record label imprint and a merchandise line rooted in Japanese visual kei culture. Its identity is tied to Mana's artistic vision and to the legacy of the bands it has supported.
History
Midi:Nette was founded in 1991 by Mana, a musician, entrepreneur and fashion designer, together with members of the visual kei band Malice Mizer, to release the band's first album Memoire. Mana was the principal owner of the label. All of Malice Mizer's works were recorded and released through the newly created label until 1997, when the band received an offer to become major and debut through Nippon Columbia. In 1999, after the death of drummer Kami and the departure of vocalist Gackt, Malice Mizer left Nippon Columbia and returned to Midi:Nette to regain total control and full freedom over their activities without interference in their work. When Malice Mizer entered a hiatus in 2001, Midi:Nette began releasing the works of Mana's solo project Moi dix Mois in 2002. Shortly afterwards, the musicians Kaya and Hora were working on other musical projects but caught Mana's attention, who offered them a contract with his label. As the guitarist had studied music production, he produced the duo. Schwarz Stein recorded two albums and two singles. Despite growing popularity in Japan, Kaya and Hora separated in 2004 due to differences of musical opinion. More recently, Midi:Nette's main website was taken offline, leaving only its online sales space. The label's current status is uncertain, as Mana released the last Moi dix Mois album, Reprise, through a new label called Maglaia.
