Overview

Mibau Stema Group is a major European supplier of aggregates — crushed stone, gravel, and sand — for the asphalt, construction, and concrete industries. The group operates three quarries in Norway, including Jelsa, the largest in Northern Europe, with a total production capacity exceeding 20 million tonnes per year. Its integrated value chain covers production, logistics, and sales, supported by a fleet of seven self-discharging vessels and over 40 terminals along the North Sea and Baltic coasts. The company employs around 500 people across seven countries. The group traces its origins to two founding companies: Stenmaterialer & Shipping Aabenraa ApS (Stema), established in 1975 in Denmark with just two employees, and Elbe-Weser-Handelskontor (EWH), founded in 1978 by Hans-Jürgen Hartmann in Germany. EWH later rebranded as Mibau, and its headquarters in Cadenberge remains the group's headquarters today. Over the decades, the company expanded through acquisitions and infrastructure investments, including the development of the Jelsa quarry, the acquisition of terminals, and the modernisation of its shipping fleet. In 2016, HeidelbergCement became a 60% majority shareholder after contributing the Tau and Dirdal quarries to the group. In 2024, the entire group and its subsidiaries were rebranded under the Mibau Stema Group umbrella. The company emphasises sustainability and innovation, exemplified by its Laboratory 4.0 — the world's first fully automated laboratory for determining grain size distribution in accordance with EN 933-1 — located at the Jelsa quarry. Mibau Stema Group serves customers across Northern and Central Europe, delivering aggregates by land, sea, and river. Its self-discharging vessels and strategically located terminals enable efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable bulk material transportation. The group's 50th anniversary in 2025 marks five decades of growth and development in the aggregates industry.

History

The history of Mibau Stema Group spans nearly five decades, beginning with two separate companies that would eventually merge into a leading European aggregates supplier. In 1975, Stenmaterialer & Shipping Aabenraa ApS (Stema) was founded in Denmark with just two employees. The company traded raw materials for the concrete and asphalt industry, providing services such as sales, supply, chartering, stevedoring, and shipping. It sold and traded limestone and aggregates from Denmark, Sweden, the UK, and Norway, selling in Denmark and exporting primarily to Germany. In 1978, Hans-Jürgen Hartmann founded Elbe-Weser-Handelskontor (EWH) in Germany. Initially operating out of the owner family's private home for five years, the company built its first headquarters in Cadenberge in 1983. EWH later rebranded as Mibau, and the Cadenberge location remains the headquarters of Mibau Stema Group to this day. In its early years, EWH traded in a wide variety of goods, including Danish wooden houses, garden furniture, windows, doors, and wheel loaders. Another key pillar was the import of Faxe lime, a porous limestone from quarries near the Danish town of Faxe, which was spread over forests by helicopter to combat forest dieback. Over the following decades, the company expanded through strategic acquisitions and infrastructure investments. In 2009, the self-unloading vessels MS Bulknes and MS Belt were delivered. In 2010, the MS Fitnes self-unloading vessel (32,000 tdw) was delivered. In 2011, the Jelsa quarry in Norway completed a production capacity ramp-up to ten million tonnes per year, securing production reserves for more than thirty years. In 2012, the company sold more than fifteen million tonnes of crushed stone, gravel, and sand within one year for the first time. In 2016, HeidelbergCement became a 60% majority shareholder after contributing the Tau and Dirdal quarries to the group. In 2020, the first vessel's new building, mv Starnes, was delivered into TimeCharter. In 2021, the second vessel's new building, mv Fjordnes, was delivered into TimeCharter, and Mibau Germany acquired shares in Dever Baustoffhandel Papenburg and Schulte & Bruns Emden with MTE Mineralstoff Terminal Emden. In 2022/2023, the shipping fleet was modernised with a 15% CO2 reduction footprint. In 2024, the entire group and its subsidiaries were rebranded under the Mibau Stema Group umbrella, and Andreas Jensen was acquired and renamed Mibau Stema S&G Aabenraa. Today, Mibau Stema Group operates three quarries in Norway, including Jelsa, the largest in Northern Europe, with a total production capacity of over 20 million tonnes per year. The group employs around 500 people in seven countries and operates a fleet of seven self-discharging vessels and over 40 terminals along the North Sea and Baltic. In 2025, the company celebrates its 50th anniversary, reflecting on its history and looking forward to a sustainable future.
