Overview

Miaoli Motor Transportation (苗栗汽車客運) is a bus operator headquartered at No. 206, Zhongzheng Road, Toufen Township, Miaoli County, Taiwan. According to its official company history, it traces its origins to the Japanese colonial-era Zhannán Tuozhi Plant Association (展南拓植株式會社), founded by Huang Weisheng, which initially engaged in sugar making, tea, and coal mining with human-powered rail carts as its main transport tool. After the 1935 central Taiwan earthquake damaged the tracks, the business added buses and later formed the Zhannán Bus Department with the Zhunan Zhaohé Company, a predecessor of Rixin Bus Company. After the retrocession of Taiwan, Shancheng Transportation Company was established for tourism, and around the 50th year of the Republic of China (1961) the company was formally renamed Miaoli Motor Transportation Co., Ltd. At its peak it operated 56 routes, over 250 vehicles, and more than 600 employees; in recent years, affected by economic downturn and the August 1988 labor unrest, it streamlined to 29 operating routes (combining highway bus and city bus), 130 vehicles (including 14 tour buses), and about 180–200 employees.

History

Miaoli Motor Transportation traces its origins to the Japanese colonial-era Zhannán Tuozhi Plant Association (展南拓植株式會社), founded by Huang Weisheng. It initially focused on sugar making, tea, and coal mining, with human-powered rail carts as the main transport tool; the track ran from today's Dacheng Middle School, along Toufen Elementary School to Zhonghua Road, then past today's Toufen Farmers' Association to Zhunan Railway Station. In the 24th year of the Republic of China (Showa 10, 1935), the central Taiwan earthquake caused a landslide at Da'nanpu in Nanzhuang (today's Baiyun Temple area), damaging the rail carts. At that time the company already had two or three buses; it later formed the Zhannán Bus Department with the Zhunan Zhaohé Company, the predecessor of Rixin Bus Company, and added more than fifty eight-seat minibuses, though only seven remained due to the war. After the retrocession of Taiwan, conditions improved and Shancheng Transportation Company was established to handle tourism business. Around the 50th year of the Republic of China (1961), the company was formally renamed Miaoli Motor Transportation Co., Ltd. At its peak, the company had 56 routes, more than 250 vehicles, and over 600 employees. In recent years, affected by economic downturn and the August 1988 (77th year of the Republic of China) labor unrest, it streamlined personnel and remote routes, currently operating 29 routes (combining highway bus and city bus), 130 vehicles (including 14 tour buses), and about 180–200 employees.
