Overview

The Czech Journal of International Relations (CJIR), formerly known as Mezinárodní vztahy (International Relations), is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Institute of International Relations (IIR) in Prague, Czech Republic. Founded in 1966 by the Institute of International Politics and Economics, the predecessor of the current IIR, it was the first and for a long time the only scholarly journal in political science and international relations in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. The journal publishes original research in International Relations and related fields such as European studies, international security, foreign policy analysis, and development studies. It is fully open access with no article processing charges and is indexed in Web of Science and SCOPUS. Since 2023, the journal has been published entirely in English under the title Czech Journal of International Relations. It is particularly interested in research relevant to the Central and Eastern European context, including European politics, international institutions, small states, environmental politics, international conflicts, gender, and migration. The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles, discussion articles, and book reviews, and invites special issue proposals.

History

The first issue of Mezinárodní vztahy (International Relations) was published in 1966 by the Institute of International Politics and Economics (Prague), the predecessor of the contemporary Institute of International Relations. It was the first and, for a long time, the only scholarly journal in the fields of political science and international relations in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. Jaroslav Šedivý was tasked with launching the journal and led its first three volumes (he was dismissed from the Institute for political reasons in 1969). From the beginning, Mezinárodní vztahy was conceived as a quarterly scholarly journal where researchers in international relations and related disciplines could publish their research results and exchange views on various problems as well as on theoretical and methodological aspects of international relations research. The period of normalization changed the character of the journal. In the 1970s and 1980s, its pages served mainly to promote Soviet and Czechoslovak foreign policy, to defend the principles on which they were based, and to criticize the West, especially the United States. After 1989, Mezinárodní vztahy underwent a radical transformation along the lines of Western scholarly journals. The journal again fulfilled the role of a scholarly periodical. Since 2001, all refereed submissions are subject to a strict double-blind peer review process. In 2018, the journal expanded to include its English version titled Czech Journal of International Relations. Starting in 2023, the journal is published entirely in English. The journal is published by the Institute of International Relations (IIR) in Prague, Czech Republic. The IIR is an independent public research institution which conducts scholarly research in the area of international relations. Its founder is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
