History

Meyer Seals was founded in 1879 by Hermann Meyer as a cork goods factory in Alfeld, Lower Saxony, at Sedanstraße 7. In 1880, Hermann Meyer constructed a cork cutting machine for producing round and pointed bottle corks, revolutionising the cork-processing industry. The device achieved unprecedented cutting fineness and dimensional accuracy and was patented in 1888, increasing possible daily production fivefold to 15,000 units. In 1894, another invention made the founder globally unrivaled: a machine that could cut wafer-thin cork paper (1/20 mm) from cork bark, supplied to the cigarette industry in Europe and overseas. In 1900, the Alfeld cork goods factory built a new plant at its current headquarters on Hildesheimer Straße, starting production with over 60 employees and 25 new special machines, mostly self-constructed, for the growing cork paper production. In 1914, a generational change occurred as founder Hermann Meyer left management; his sons Karl, Willy, and Richard Meyer took responsibility for the works with its 120 employees. Hermann Meyer, founder, inventor, and holder of numerous patents, died in 1935 at the age of 85. In 1945, founder-grandson Burghard Meyer, son of Karl Meyer, joined the company as the third generation. In 1960, cork production was abandoned; two years earlier, production had been fundamentally restructured to manufacture sealing inserts for aluminium and plastic closures exclusively on punching machines. In 1984, the first plant for producing PE foam was put into operation. Over generations, the company developed from its roots in cork production for glass containers into an internationally positioned market leader in sealing inserts for aluminium and plastic closures. Today, Meyer Seals operates production sites in Germany and Thailand, with sales offices in India and China, serving customers on all continents.
