History

MetroLux 12 Theatres + IMAX is a movie theatre in Loveland, Colorado, operated by Metropolitan Theatres Corporation. Metropolitan Theatres was founded in 1923 by Joseph H. Corwin, who moved to California from Sioux City, Iowa, and opened the Broadway theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The company remained privately held by the Corwin family and grew to become the dominant motion picture exhibitor in downtown Los Angeles by the late 1940s. Under Sherrill Corwin, the circuit expanded into Palm Springs and Santa Barbara, California. Metropolitan has operated in Santa Barbara County since 1950. In the mid-1960s, the company was among the first exhibition circuits in the nation to adopt a Spanish-language film policy, showing subtitled American movies and Spanish-language Mexican films; it continues to operate a Spanish-language theatre in greater Los Angeles. In September 2003, Metropolitan formed Metro/Rocky Mountain Cinemas, which operates state-of-the-art cinemas in the Denver, Colorado DMA, including Loveland, Colorado. MetroLux 12 Theatres + IMAX is one of those locations, featuring 12 screens and an IMAX auditorium. Bruce C. Corwin, Chairman and CEO, led the company for 40 years until his death on November 4, 2021. His son, David Corwin, is now President and represents the fourth generation of the Corwin family to run the company. Metropolitan Theatres currently operates 10 theatres, 52 screens, and two IMAX auditoriums in California and Colorado, and is focused on growth through new development, theatre acquisitions, and theatre management services.
