Overview
Metro Petroleum is a petroleum brand and fuel supplier in Australia. It has a network of more than 350 stores across Australia. The company states it is one of Australia's largest independent service station franchises, founded by John Dib. It operates as a franchise model, with independent operators running the retail businesses at branded sites.
History
Metro Petroleum was founded by John Dib. His journey began when his parents migrated from Lebanon to Australia, and he started his career as a paperboy before becoming a machine operator at Marshals Batteries. He opened his first Caltex franchise in 1978 in Lakemba. By 1981, Caltex entrusted him with 42 sites. From 1985 to 1995, the franchise expanded to over 70 locations, including both Caltex and Mobil sites. John, along with his brother George, became pioneers in the Mobilis Rafs Program. From 1995 to 2010, John and George merged their insights to create Metro Petroleum. They ventured into independent tobacco distribution, capturing over 34.2% of the market. The acquisition of Hill & Co from Exxon Mobil in 2005 marked a significant step in becoming a national distributor. Metro Petroleum entered Victoria in 2013, and by 2015, had created the Metro Zone. The creation of the Petit Cafe occurred in 2021, and the acquisition of Mr. Whippy in 2021 expanded their presence in the retail food sector.
