Overview

Metallbau Emmeln is a German metal engineering company based in Haren, Lower Saxony, founded in 1968 by Fritz Herbers, Ernst Thünemann and Hermann Lohmann. The company began with metal playground equipment and small amusement vehicles, then shifted its focus to amusement park attractions in the 1970s. Today it operates three closely linked divisions: leisure technology (amusement rides and attractions), container construction (custom and offshore containers), and access systems (turnstiles, gates and electronic access solutions). The company describes itself as a partner for individual metal solutions, combining engineering, craftsmanship and software. It serves amusement park operators worldwide, industry, events and public authorities. The firm is privately held as a GmbH & Co. KG, registered at the Osnabrück local court, with Frank Suelmann as managing director. Its website emphasises over 50 years of experience and more than 100 projects.

History

Metallbau Emmeln was founded in 1968 by Fritz Herbers, Ernst Thünemann and Hermann Lohmann. According to the company's own history, Thünemann and Herbers were left without work after their previous employer became insolvent, and together with Lohmann they took the risk of founding a new company. The early product range consisted of metal playground equipment and small vehicles for excursion restaurants, including the famous 'Autoscooter' and a small 'Mini-Eisenbahn' that is still produced today. As metal playground equipment was increasingly replaced by wood, the company looked for new directions. In the 1970s, the idea of amusement parks arrived from the United States, and Metallbau Emmeln focused consistently on this sector. The company expanded its offering for amusement parks and adapted it to operators' wishes. With the rise of theme parks and the demand for repeat visits, the company continued to develop new attractions. Its catalogue has included pony trekking rides, rocking boats, teacups, monorails, carousels and rail-based attractions. Its only scenic boat ride dates from 1979: Het Bos van Plop. Over the decades, the company built a strong reputation for quality in the industry. Today it operates three independent but closely networked divisions: leisure technology, container construction and access systems, serving customers worldwide. The company is registered as Metallbau Emmeln GmbH & Co. KG at the Osnabrück local court under HRA 120071, with Frank Suelmann as managing director.
