The official MERKUR SPIELHALLE website's history page states that MERKUR CASINO is today a market leader in Germany with around 350 modern entertainment centers and is also active in seven further European countries. It states that the company began as an internationally operating branch business with over 700 MERKUR Casinos domestically and abroad in 1974, when company founder Paul Gauselmann opened the first own branch in Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony. It describes the development of the first 'Spielothek' as one of the most significant milestones of Gauselmann history, and says the branches set themselves apart from conventional slot-machine halls with a design concept based on three-star hotel standards. It adds that Paul Gauselmann has since been regarded as the 'inventor' of the modern gaming venue, and that first-class ambience, the best selection of games, excellent service, and qualified staff make the MERKUR Casinos of the MERKUR GROUP among the most popular in Germany. It also states that 'Die Welt' recognized MERKUR CASINO as 'Service-Champion' in 2013, and that the company was named a 'Top national employer' by 'FOCUS-Business' for the ninth consecutive time.
