History

The MERKUR brand, originating in Solingen, has existed for over 125 years and is known for producing sophisticated and high-quality double-edge safety razors in Germany. The firm was founded in 1896 by Emil Hermes. Because other steel firms in Solingen already carried the name Hermes, he registered the Roman name MERKUR for the messenger god Hermes as a trademark. Early models included the Barthobel, whose first wet-shaving devices already had a safety comb into which a changeable blade shortened to 4 cm was clamped. At the beginning of the 20th century, production began of double-edged, extremely sharp razor blades of the kind known today, reducing the risk of injury and allowing dull blades to be replaced inexpensively. By the end of the 1920s, the sons Eich (the elder) and Hans joined the firm.
