Overview
Mercedes-Benz is a German luxury automotive brand operated principally through Mercedes-Benz AG, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. Its corporate and technological ancestry reaches back to Carl Benz’s 1886 Patent-Motorwagen and to Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach’s early petrol-engine vehicles. The Mercedes name itself emerged from Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft’s 1901 Mercedes automobile, named after Mercédès Jellinek, the daughter of automobile entrepreneur and distributor Emil Jellinek. Daimler registered Mercedes as a trademark in 1902. The present brand was created after the June 1926 merger of Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, which formed Daimler-Benz AG. The three-pointed-star marque became associated with engineering ambition, formal luxury, high-speed touring and, increasingly, occupant and vehicle safety. During the 1930s and the Second World War, Daimler-Benz produced both civilian vehicles and military equipment and used forced labour; that history remains an important part of the company’s institutional record. After the war, Mercedes-Benz rebuilt its passenger-car business and expanded internationally, developing a reputation for durable executive cars, grand touring models, buses and commercial vehicles. The brand’s portfolio has traditionally covered compact cars, executive sedans, estate cars, coupes, convertibles, sports cars, luxury limousines and off-road vehicles. Important nameplates include the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class sedans; G-Class, GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE and GLS sport-utility vehicles; the SL and AMG GT sports-car families; and the Sprinter, Vito and Citan vans. Mercedes-AMG provides high-performance derivatives and dedicated performance vehicles, while Mercedes-Maybach occupies the ultra-luxury end of the range. The G-Class, introduced in 1979, has become one of the brand’s most recognizable products because of its boxy design, military-derived origins and off-road capability. Electrification has become central to the brand’s strategy. Mercedes-Benz has marketed battery-electric vehicles under the EQ designation, including the EQA, EQB, EQE, EQS and related SUV, van and performance variants, while also continuing to sell combustion-engine and plug-in-hybrid vehicles. The company has used concept vehicles such as VISION EQXX to demonstrate efficiency and long-distance electric driving technology. Digital interfaces, driver-assistance systems, connected services and software-defined vehicle platforms are increasingly important to the brand’s product planning. Mercedes-Benz is sold and manufactured across major world markets through a combination of wholly owned operations, joint ventures, contract arrangements and local production. In China, Beijing Benz produces Mercedes-Benz vehicles with BAIC Group. The company also has a long-standing presence in the United States and numerous European and Asian markets. Heavy trucks and buses bearing the Mercedes-Benz name were transferred to Daimler Truck when that business separated from the former Daimler group at the end of 2021; the Mercedes-Benz brand’s core operating focus is now passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Daimler AG changed its name to Mercedes-Benz Group AG in February 2022. The brand’s long-standing slogan is “The Best or Nothing.”
History
Mercedes-Benz’s history combines two pioneering German engineering lineages. Carl Benz patented the Patent-Motorwagen in January 1886, generally regarded as the first practical automobile powered by an internal-combustion engine. Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed a separate petrol-engine vehicle tradition in the same period. Benz later introduced the Benz Velo, while Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft developed increasingly sophisticated automobiles for wealthy customers and sporting events. The Mercedes identity was established in 1901 when DMG marketed the Mercedes 35 hp, associated with Emil Jellinek and named for his daughter Mercédès. Jellinek promoted the cars among affluent European and American buyers and helped shape the brand’s commercial identity. Mercedes became a protected trademark in 1902. The modern Mercedes-Benz name followed the 1926 merger of DMG and Benz & Cie. into Daimler-Benz AG. The company expanded through luxury cars, racing, commercial vehicles, engines and buses. Its 770 model became prominent in the 1930s, including during Nazi rule. From the late 1930s, Daimler-Benz increasingly served Germany’s military economy, producing trucks and aircraft engines. During the Second World War, the company used forced labourers, prisoners of war and concentration-camp detainees. The company later acknowledged this history and contributed to compensation efforts. Postwar Mercedes-Benz rebuilt its passenger-car operations and developed a broad international distribution network. The 1950s and 1960s brought influential models such as the 300 SL and the 600 limousine, while the company expanded in North America through a distribution partnership with Studebaker. Its engineering reputation was reinforced by innovations in braking, restraint systems, vehicle dynamics and body construction. The S-Class became a recurring platform for introducing safety and comfort technologies that later spread through the wider industry. The G-Class arrived in 1979 as a robust four-wheel-drive vehicle and subsequently became both a specialist off-road model and a luxury icon. Mercedes-Benz also developed a broad commercial-vehicle business, although heavy trucks and buses moved to Daimler Truck after the 2021 corporate separation. AMG, originally an independent performance engineering company, became majority owned by Mercedes-Benz in 1999 and was integrated into the group. Maybach was later revived as Mercedes-Maybach, a luxury sub-brand based on selected Mercedes-Benz vehicles. In the twenty-first century, the brand has balanced traditional combustion-powered luxury vehicles with electrification, hybridization, connected services and automated-driving research. Mercedes-Benz created Mercedes-Benz AG in 2019 for cars and vans, while Daimler Truck assumed responsibility for branded heavy commercial vehicles. The parent company’s renaming as Mercedes-Benz Group AG in 2022 completed the new corporate positioning. Today the brand remains active globally, with passenger cars, performance and ultra-luxury derivatives, SUVs, electric models and light commercial vans.
