Overview
The Meraner Hütte – also known as Hermann-Gritsch-Haus – is a managed mountain hut (Schutzhütte) of the Sektion Meran of the Alpenverein Südtirol (AVS) in the Sarntal Alps in South Tyrol, Italy. It sits at 1,937 metres above sea level on the Sarntal western ridge, at the edge of the Meran 2000 hiking and skiing area. The hut is a popular base for walks and summit tours in the surrounding mountains, including the Hirzer, the Oswaldscharte, the Ifinger, the Verdinser Plattenspitze, the Hochplattspitze, the Große Mittager and the broad Tschögglberg. It is a station on the European long-distance footpath E5 and on the Sarntaler Hufeisentour. The hut offers 38 beds in shared rooms and 32 mattress places, and is classified as family-friendly (AV classification II). It is run by a father-and-daughter team. The Meraner Hütte was built with donations during the 1960s and inaugurated in 1970, named in honour of the late AVS section chairman Hermann Gritsch. It replaced the Lodnerhütte and Hirzerhütte, which had been expropriated after the First World War. The hut is accessible on foot in about two hours from the Falzeben car park in Hafling or about one and a half hours from the Ifingerbahn mountain station, as well as via the Haflinger Panoramarunde or from the Sarntal.
History
The Meraner Hütte – also known as Hermann-Gritsch-Haus – is a Schutzhütte (mountain hut) of the Sektion Meran of the Alpenverein Südtirol (AVS) in the Sarntal Alps in South Tyrol, Italy. It is located on the Sarntal western ridge at 1,937 metres above sea level. After the First World War, the two mountain huts of the Sektion Meran of the German and Austrian Alpine Club, the Lodnerhütte and the Hirzerhütte, were expropriated by the Italian state and handed over to the Club Alpino Italiano. After the Second World War and the founding of the Sektion Meran of the Alpenverein Südtirol, the desire arose to build a new hut as a replacement. The Meraner Hütte, built with donations during the 1960s, was inaugurated in 1970. It was named in honour of the deceased AVS section chairman Hermann Gritsch. The hut is a station on the European long-distance footpath E5 and on the Sarntaler Hufeisentour. In 2021, its 50th anniversary was marked in the AVS magazine 'Berge erleben'.
