Overview

Merényi Gusztáv Hospital (Hungarian: Merényi Gusztáv Kórház) is a historic healthcare institution located along Gyáli út in Budapest's IX district. Originally built in 1898 as the Budapest Honvéd Garrison Hospital, it served military purposes for decades before transitioning to civilian use in 1957. The hospital was renamed in 1970 after Merényi Gusztáv and expanded over the years, reaching 447 beds by 1971. It was affiliated with Szent István Hospital from 1977, later became part of the South Pest Central Hospital (Dél-pesti Centrumkórház), and in 2023 was transferred to Semmelweis University. Today it operates as a university-affiliated hospital providing a range of medical services, including oncology, neurology, and chronic internal medicine, as reflected in recent news from the parent institution's website.

History

Merényi Gusztáv Hospital was originally constructed in 1898 as the Budapest Honvéd Garrison Hospital (Budapesti Honvéd Helyőrségi Kórház). Its fence was designed by Vezelka Venanto. The facility initially had three pavilions with 204 beds. Through subsequent developments, by the end of World War II it had expanded to 292 beds, and after 1945 it operated as the Honvéd Aviation Hospital (Honvéd Repülőkórház). In 1957, the military handed the institution over for civilian purposes, and it was transferred to the IX district Council under the name Gyáli úti kórház (Gyáli Road Hospital). In 1970, it adopted the name Merényi Gusztáv. During this period further expansions took place, so that by 1971 it had 447 hospital beds. From 1977, the hospital belonged to Szent István Hospital. Later, it became part of the South Pest Central Hospital (Dél-pesti Centrumkórház), and from 2023 it was transferred to Semmelweis University.
