History

In 1965, Martin Michaeli founded MEPHISTO with the ambition of creating the best shoes in the world. The idea for the name was born in Sessenheim, the village where Michaeli lodged at L'Auberge du Boeuf, a half-timbered hotel-restaurant that also houses a small museum dedicated to Goethe, author of Faust; the character Mephisto appears in Goethe's reworking of the Faust myth. In 1966 the first MEPHISTO models were produced.
