Overview
The Meilerhütte is a mountain refuge of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV) located on the Dreitorspitzgatterl ridge in the Wetterstein mountains, directly on the Wettersteinkamm that forms the border between Tyrol (Austria) and Bavaria (Germany). It sits at an elevation of 2,366 metres and is far from valleys and cable cars, making it a destination for hikers and climbers seeking a remote alpine experience. The hut is owned and operated by the DAV Sektion Garmisch-Partenkirchen, while the adjacent older structure, the Alte Meilerhütte, belongs to the DAV Sektion München. The Meilerhütte serves as a base for ascents of the Törlspitzen, the Partenkirchner Dreitorspitze (2,633 m), the Leutascher Dreitorspitze (2,682 m), and the Musterstein (2,478 m). It is typically reached from Elmau via the Wettersteinalm and Schachen in about five hours, from Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski station via the Partnachklamm and Kälbersteig in about five and a half hours, or from Leutasch through the Bergleintal or over the Söllerpass in about four and a half hours. The hut offers overnight accommodation and is open seasonally, typically from late spring to early autumn. As a brand, the Meilerhütte represents a traditional alpine refuge within the DAV network, providing food, shelter, and information for mountaineers. Its official presence is maintained through the DAV Sektion Garmisch-Partenkirchen website, which lists opening times and live webcam feeds. The hut is a well-known landmark in the Wetterstein range and a key stop on multi-day traverses.
History
The Meilerhütte was established in 1898 when Leo Meiler of the Bavarian section of the German Alpine Club built a small shelter. A few years later, the section constructed a sturdy stone building on the Dreitorspitzgatterl. The building material was extracted from the rocky ridge of the Törlspitze, and the craftsmen used existing clay as mortar. The Meilerhütte has been rebuilt and expanded several times. The most recent extension above the entrance was built between 1996 and 1998 by the Garmisch-Partenkirchen section. Today, the Neue Meilerhütte is owned by the DAV Sektion Garmisch-Partenkirchen, while the adjacent Alte Meilerhütte belongs to the DAV Sektion München. The hut remains a key facility for alpinists in the Wetterstein range, offering shelter and sustenance in a remote setting.
