Overview

MEGWARE Computer Vertrieb und Service GmbH is a German high-performance computing (HPC) company headquartered in Chemnitz, Saxony. Founded on 1 February 1990 by Dr. Gerd Maudrich, Steffen Eckerscham and Jürgen Gretzschel, the company began life in a garage producing computers and grew into one of Europe's leading supercomputing specialists. Over more than three decades it has developed, designed, manufactured and marketed successive generations of supercomputers, many of which have appeared in the TOP500 ranking of the world's most powerful HPC systems. MEGWARE's early years were focused on the German market: it rapidly expanded to around 30 computer shops in central Germany and became a full-service IT systems provider for small and medium-sized businesses, schools, public authorities and universities. In the mid-1990s the company moved into the design and production of scalable compute clusters. Its first cluster was delivered to Chemnitz University of Technology in 2000; known as CLiC (Chemnitz Linux Cluster), it was planned, built and installed within weeks, reached position 126 in that year's TOP500 list, and was recognised as the world's fastest computer built from standard commodity components. That project opened the door to numerous installations at research institutes, universities and industrial customers across Europe. Today MEGWARE positions itself as a complete-solution partner for high-performance computing. Its portfolio covers cluster and supercomputer design, energy-efficient cooling of hardware components, integration of Intel, AMD and NVIDIA platforms (including NVIDIA H200 and NVIDIA DGX systems), and benchmarking services. The company operates a Benchmark Center where customers can test new accelerators, such as AMD Instinct MI350P PCIe. MEGWARE emphasises that it develops and produces entirely in Germany ('Made in Germany') and is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Its reference customers include TU Darmstadt, LRZ, KIT, FKFS, DWD, CERN and the University of Münster. The company remains privately held and is managed by Axel Auweter and André Singer.

History

MEGWARE's corporate history began on 1 February 1990 in the garage of one of its founders, where the company started manufacturing computers with an initial team of six employees. The founders were Dr. Gerd Maudrich, Steffen Eckerscham and Jürgen Gretzschel. The business expanded rapidly: within a short time it opened around 30 computer shops in central Germany and evolved into a holistic IT system solutions provider for small and medium-sized enterprises, schools, public authorities and universities. In the mid-1990s MEGWARE began planning and producing scalable compute clusters. Its first cluster was delivered in 2000 to Chemnitz University of Technology. Known as the Chemnitz Linux Cluster (CLiC), it was planned, manufactured and installed within a few weeks. That same year it reached position 126 in the TOP500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers and was also recognised as the world's fastest computer based on conventional computer components. This order marked the beginning of numerous system installations at research institutes, universities and industrial and commercial customers throughout Europe. Many of the projects MEGWARE has realised since then rank among the leading systems in their respective countries and achieve excellent positions in the TOP500 list. Over more than 35 years of company history, MEGWARE has established itself as one of Europe's leading supercomputing specialists. It develops, designs, produces and markets state-of-the-art supercomputers, many of which appear in the TOP500 list. The company emphasises that it develops and produces entirely in Germany and is certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Its portfolio includes complete HPC solutions, energy-efficient cooling of cluster hardware components, and integration of Intel, AMD and NVIDIA platforms, including NVIDIA H200 and NVIDIA DGX systems. MEGWARE also operates a Benchmark Center, which was expanded in 2026 with AMD's CDNA 4 accelerator, the AMD Instinct MI350P PCIe, for customer testing. Reference customers include TU Darmstadt, LRZ, KIT, FKFS, DWD, CERN and the University of Münster. The company is managed by Axel Auweter and André Singer.
